The source of the original variant may never be known but I lay the blame for the whole vax/unvax furore and subsequent shit slinging squarely at the door of the media both commercial and (especially) social. If this had kicked off in the pre-internet era, vaccination refusal rates rates would be much lower, I have no doubt. Actually, in the early history of vaccines… the anti-vaccine lobby was a lot bigger than the current group. Mandatory vaccination was a thing then too, George Washington required his troops to be vaccinated against smallpox… so that’s not a new concept either. The big difference is that we now have a well defined and peer reviewed scientific methodology… which eases more of the public’s minds to what there may be happening beyond their ken. There will always be a degree of appropriate scepticism to counter-check, just as there will always be a degree of paranoid fringes (both sides) whose fears will never be quelled by anyone who doesn’t hold the same world view that they do. But I totally agree that the evolving media size and lack of regulation is starting to reduce trust in science because an idiot can call “This stuff is making people unhealthy!” without need for evidence or peer review and be heard globally.
