I was an apprentice mechanic of the old school some 55 years ago (before changing career), cleanliness of the workbench and floor was paramount, old school engineering at it's best, here is a little analogy, fairly recently I was chatting to a local gunsmith in his shop whom I am very friendly with, a local gamekeeper came in with what looked on the face of it a mint Sako 243, he wanted to trade up to a 308 (he had the variation), a cursory look over and then the bore camera went down, "shock horror" it was so badly pitted it was scrap, when quizzed how often he cleaned it the chap said "every few months or so", to cap it all he used a moderator and always left it on (|those that understand moderators know exactly what this means), you might as well pour caustic soda in the barrel. Anyone who has visited say the Triumph Factory will notice how clean the floors and workbenches are, but I am old school and as the old saying goes you "pay your money and take your chance". I do love reading some of the threads though, a lot are tongue in cheek and thought provoking. Ride safe all.

Working away in my garage some two weeks ago. Happy to have some down time to do the things I enjoy. I go to my old drill press and clamp a piece in to the vise and hit the switch. Machine starts as usual, sounds good but smoke begins to fill the room. It's 37 year old motor died. Now, after a week and a half of locating the proper motor, ordering it, arguing with the vendor as to why it is taking so long, tracking the shipment on FedEx, rewiring the machine, ordering a new switch just to be thorough...WHAT WAS I MAKING IN THE FIRST PLACE ?...J.D.
