When I went over to 10 I lost all my photos. I did have back up but never did get them all back. Even the pc people could not reinstall them. But I don't know if it was windows 10 or the fact the photos application I was using Picasso no longer used the old system.
    Regards
    Joe.

Never known an OS upgrade to actually delete files even the old version of the original operating system will be saved under windows old, all other files will be ignored....i would hazard a guess that the files are lurking somewhere....just a case of knowing where to look Joe.

My advice to you Steve is get yourself a Chromebook. Far and away better than anything with an MS label because it just works, always, every day just works. No doing updates, no waiting hours for it to start up, it just works.

Cheers to you matey have a happy healthy and prosperous 2020.

    Dave

A PC with SSD storage and a reasonable processor (core i5 or above) running windows 10 starts up immediately without any delays. If you keep up to date with patch updates and a good antivirus software you will be able to stay safe online.

Yeah but, the longer you run a windows PC the slower it runs. Ideally you need to re-install the OS every now and then. What a faff !:mad::mad:

Good regular housekeeping should help mitigate having to reinstall the OS @andypandy. Like most things what you choose to access the internet and run your stuff on comes down to personal choice.

Getting rid of a £800 pc and £200 monitor seems a shame.

My computer has a Bullguard Premium antivirus program that does an automatic daily tune up on it, I've had windows 10 since it was launched and never had any problems with it, if you use the Pro version of Windows 10 it comes with Bitlocker.

Others have outlined the main steps to upgrade a win 7 installation to win 10. Backup your data, Download then run the ISO and follow the prompts, add a valid activation key. In the past the equivalent win 7 code worked fine to activate win 10, so a pro win7 code would activate a pro win 10 install.

But before you start it is worth checking whether the current hardware and software on your PC is compatible with the newer operating system. So perhaps try this first...

    http://download.microsoft.com/download/C/8/0/C8007C4E-D1DD-4922-A966-3A927E86A033/GWXWebWindows.exe

That check should identify any potential problems. This is important if you depend on using a piece of specialist software which is only designed to run on win7.

If it finds issues you have two options - replace with a win10 compatible PC and then shift over your data, or just keep using your Win7 PC until it turns to stone.. If that is your choice - just make sure you are no longer using any version of Internet Explorer - as they are now so riddled with holes even Microsoft has thrown in the towel trying to keep it hack proof. If you stay with win 7 use Firefox instead for web browsing (its free) and more robust against rouge websites, scareware and the usual scams.

Just because Microsoft has ceased support for your current operating system does not mean you PC will overnight stop working, but over time it may expose your PC to additional risks from virus attacks especially once antivirus solutions start abandoning support for your operating system - but that could be many years hence.

Ok a helpful tips if you are upgrading from 7 to 10 , one of the things that will halt the process , windows 7 on some computers has Bluetooth and networking drivers that won't work in 10 , and as windows 10 does compatibility check's it won't proceed. So save all your documents and photos etc, uninstall the hardware and driver's , delete them , the driver's that is , reinstall 7 , don't let it reinstall all the driver's , then install a USB WiFi networking device or USB cable network device , then do windows 10 upgrade :kissing_heart::cool::blush:. Happy days  this worked for me , I had Bluetooth and networking drivers conflicts.

    cheers capt
