On this planet it's a remotely operated vehicle, used in the oil/gas industry mostly. A big boys toy

hmm, my post in reply to Dogface has never appeared so in answer to your question an ROV is a remotely operated vehicle. Generally a Sub controlled from a ship or rig for various operations mainly in the oil/gas industry.
