What’s That You Say? Ears Plugged?

I have several types and brands of ear plus, David, but my favorites are the ones that MyEvilTwin recommended--the EarPeace ear plugs. I also got them on Amazon. They make several types for different activities. I use the Motorcycle ear plus on my bikes (doh) and I also bought the Music ones for when I attend concerts. Well, for when I used to attend concerts--damn you COVID-19.

I also have custom ear plus that I like from Fit Ear. I got them at a motorcycle rally a few years back. They are the kind where they basically squirt the material into your ear, let them set up in your ear, pull them out, then let them harden. I like those quite a lot and they have been pretty much indestructible for me. If I'm using my Sena, however, the music comes through much more clearly with the EarPeace.

 

I have been using earplugs since I put a helmet on and realised there are no such thing as a "silent" motorcycle helmet.
The wind noise is just to annoying without plugs.

I'm using the cheapo stuff the guys in the video is using, lets in some sound and that's the way I want it.

From time to time I use in-ear headphones with my scala, but haven't really found any that has a snugg fit in my ear and blocks the wind-noise out perfectly.

 

Modern lightweight helmets, with all the vents and stuff can be really noisy. I remember reading an article where they actually measured the sound levels inside various top brand lids and, at speed, most were well over 90db. I have always worn soft ear plugs when riding. My favourites are Howard Leight Max Lite which cut out all the harsh noise without making you feel isolated from the outside world. I've had mild tinnitus in one ear for a couple of years now, due to not wearing my ear defenders enough while working and I'm determined to not make it any worse!

The Howard Leight ear plugs are by far the best foam ear plugs you could buy IMHO...used them in my previously life on Police bikes and still use them on my own bike ...well worth the money

 

I have it too jtC.

Not quite sure how. Could be hereditary, my mother had it. Could be the bikes, haven't alway worn ear plugs. Could be 30 years wandering around inside buildings with the fire alarms blaring, trying to find the source.

I have a clock radio softly playing to help me sleep.

 

Will have to get myself a 100 pack of these as a few of you say they are good.
I go through quite many of them a year.

Downside with the greenish colour is that its isn't as easy to tell when they are dirty as with the yellow ones I guess.

 

. I've often wondered about this. I use a sat nav when touring but only use the visual display as I also use ear plugs. The only ones I've found were American and cost a fortune.

I’ve worked on Fast Jets for quite a few years until recently and have always been very careful, using earplugs as well as ear defenders, and often specialist helmets.
Luckily I’ve managed to avoid Tinnitus, with only slight hearing loss in a specific range which could just be attributed to ageing
I know how debilitating Tinnitus can be though, as an ex’s dad ended up committing suicide because he couldn’t cope with it.

 

I have my satnav stream audio to my Bluetooth headset and can hear it fine with plugs in.

 

I prefer the E_A_R foam ear plugs, which work well for me but do deteriorate quickly after a few uses. It is possible to wash and re-use them but they're never quite as good as a new pair.

 

They are not expensive so I just wear them a few times then bin them. Dirty ear plugs is a sure fire way to get an ear infection.

 

At 15p a pair (or less when I get them discounted) I just use a pair for each ride then bin them.
You’re right though @GladImbackontwowheels an ear infection is not nice, up there with the worst pain I’ve ever experienced.

 

Hey David. My humble apologies for submitting you (albeit unwittingly and wholly innocently) to the evils of motorcycle temptation!!

On a serious note - well, partly - you can tell your wife that I (WE) am (are) thinking only of her longterm wellbeing .... insomuch as hearing damage is progressive and irreversible. Motorcycle helmet wear is the largest single contributor to hearing loss in general population health terms. And you do want to continue to hear her sweet voice and enjoy long term engagement with her conversations about baby showers; mall shopping and the strange noise being made by the family car .... right? Yes, of course you do. And I knew that.

THE best and most comfortable ear defenders are the custom made ones - there are kits that allow you to make your own but, I understand, they aren't quite as effective as professionaly made ones. The extra expense is worth every penny (cent) for the comfort and protection provided - trust me, I know.

Just be very, very careful when you first ride with decent ear plugs - keep your eyes on the speedometer - you'll be amazed at how much faster you are actually going then the speed you think you are going!

Good luck with calming her down - if she cares for your hearing and general wellbeing, she will, I'm sure, agree to the investment!

 

And then never again hear the sweet sound of a triple on song? Or a duck quacking?

Aaaahhh ..... Grasshopper - what you seek is "selective deafness"! This can only be found in the inner recesses of the quietest mind. So sorry, Duck, but you must first find a way of attaining quietness of mind before being able to filter out blah blah blah........

 

You could always wear the ear plugs in the house and not on your bike, Duck. Just a thought...

 

We recently found out the ear defenders the good old USAF was issuing us were substandard, so though we used them, it didn’t help much apparently. Sorry to hear your X FIL had to go out like that.

 

Same here was around fast jets for year's standard issue 3m yellow foam ear plugs issued, original ear defenders where upgraded some years back Pelter type extra wide, I always took care off my ears also on the range I had a colleague who was going slightly deaf in his left ear he was right handed but the noise from the muzzle retort damaged his hearing.
