Very interesting @Col_C , well mine isn't connected to any of your suggestions being an 09 bike and me being opposed to such " advancement" in intrusions.

In which case that only leaves two options, road positioning only possible on a bike but that would require very accurate gps, or the accelerometer which monitors phone orientation, so could sense changes in bank angle of you/bike and match to bends in the road. Now that is quite clever and REALLY big brother territory!

 

Certainly puzzled me and still not worked it out, asked a few IT friends and they couldn't answer it either.

I found this:

How does Google know I am riding a motorcycle?
There are two sensors in your phone called Accelerometer and Gyroscope.

Based on the data from these two sensors combined with your GPS data, it can be easily predicted what kind of vehicle are your driving.

For eg, if you are going in car, the data from Accelerometer and Gyroscope would be pretty much stable but you are on a bike, you phone Gyroscope will be changing directions in many ways.

Based on this data, you can approximate the vehicle.
