Drained a lot out of the tank. Put 17L of Shell Vpower in. Took it for a blast on the motorway and it's still the same. Engine light is still on and it's still refusing to idle. Runs fine over 3k revs it's just below that :(

Sounds like you could be running lean, go over the system and check no pipes are split, leaking or loose.

But what could cause it so suddenly to stop idling?

Looking at reports of similar on the various forums, it appears that the majority of snags of this type are caused by split vacuum pipes, loose clamps or dirty carbs.
Some have a stepper motor or idle speed controller failure.
Go for easy stuff first, look at all pipes and anything obvious, next pull the carbs for ultra sonic cleaning to remove gum or debris in the jets.
I think I may have a Haynes manual for your model, I will see if there is anything in there that might help

Dayoshir, had a look in my Haynes manual for triples, not a lot to add to the above, suggest you pull the carbs, clean, re assemble with new or serviceable hoses, set up the vacuum and see where you are from there, next step is check the HT system and ignition components.
    Hope this helps

    Thanks for the help guys.

Had to bite the bullet and buy a newer reliable bike as its my only way of getting to work :(

So on Wednesday I'll be taking delivery of a 2009 Aprilia Shiver 750 GT with 4300 miles on the clock!!!

This will give me more time to fiddle with the RS. Ordered TuneECU and cable so going to plug it in and see when it arrives :)

Ok, so had a fiddle with TuneECU today :)

Got it idling again, had to adjust something to 25 and something to 9.7 lol

Glad to hear it, saves pulling the carbs apart, go easy with the redex and hopefully all problems solved.

You should keep the rs, I had a 1999 sprint st in 2000 they run great here in OZ ! Even on 45+ degree's days , sounds like the battery corrupted the engine running file/map as all fuel injected Triumphs learn/adapt. This adaption file is what your bike runs from, put a new battery in and use tuneecu to reset adaption to factory! I had to do this on all my triumphs when batteries reached end of life!!! I have owned 4 , 94 trident(carburetors) two sprints 99 and 00. Now on 08 Bonneville America, even the Trident didn't like/run well with dud low voltage battery, when they read just 12v the electronics struggle !
