Word is they’re considering immediate impeachment and banishment from holding public office.

Agreed. It has to happen “pour encourager les autres”.

Any future would-be despot must know that this is unacceptable behaviour.

The only thing that could possibly make them funnier is writing them on the side of a bus. ;)

I wouldn't let him hold my pint, let alone public office.

Imagine for a minute that the extremist element were the ones potentially “incited” to the inappropriate act and they are the “desperate” or “mentally unstable” few, depending on your own personal standpoint.
Trump wasn’t elected by a just a few people, he was elected by a lot of people... from what I can gather, he has had a lot of votes this time, enough for it to be a two horse race. There was no landslide victory either way...
to me, that suggested that there are a vast amount of reasonable, normal, everyday people who chose Trump over Biden. Are they all being lumped in with the unpleasant elements? Is half of America “faulty” or do they just have differing opinions...

Americans have 2 choices every 4 years who have a legitimate shot at winning an election. Both sides have made it nearly impossible to have a sensible 3rd party. The middle, which is where approximately 60% of the votes has to chose the lesser of two evils when they cast their ballot. My hope is that a sensible, conservative, non racist party emerges from the rubble. We’ll see.

This isn’t about Republicans, or people who voted for Trump, or to a fair degree the mob that charged the Capitol building last night
This is about Trump the man, What sort of character would create a powder keg and then blithely stick a lighted match in it?

    There's a nail with a headache somewhere.

This is exactly why all the polarisation is both stupid and dangerous. Trump played that card strongly and ended up as president. He tapped in to a lot of resentment, sentiment, and national pride but of course not everyone with those feelings is a far-right/far-left lunatic. As always, the vocal, aggressive minority drives the narrative. What's shocking is how many people get caught up in that invective and lose all perspective. Marinade in online conspiracies and you have a perfectly baked mess.
Many Republicans, I'm sure, voted for him simply because he wasn't Democrat. it's not as if they have other options. Many more forgave Trump's sins, justifying them as forgivable in the bigger picture. That I don't understand. Call me old-fashioned but i want my leaders to have a moral backbone, a sense of basic decency and compassion beyond any political viewpoint. It's not just Congress that needs to take a good look at itself, everyone should ask themselves what is acceptable, and unacceptable, for their leaders, regardless of political persuasion. We've seen what happens to even the most stable of democracies if they don't.
Rome didn't fall in a day, but it did fall.

Every great “empire” has fallen, many of which, can be attributed to the worship of one deranged individual.

If Trump is removed from the head of the republicans, who has a chance of replacing him?

Another perspective is that yesterdays events--both the rioting as well as aspects of subsequent congressional voting about certifying the election--is about fear of losing privilege and power (or money). Check out these two links, DCS. Perhaps it's about "nothing else is working, no-one is actually listening" if that's related to "I got mine and don't want nobody to take it or have it". All the way around, it's both simple and complicated....

One of the things I've been thinking about for quite some time is the shift that has been happening in our society is a "Me, my, mine focus" over a "We, us, our" view. The concept of the greater good seems to be fading which does help me understand at least a little bit (a very little bit) how our country could elect a narcissist to be president.

Something that really struck me in listening to the news last night was a comment made by a reporter that was on the scene. He commented how many flags were flying that were Trump flags--a tribute to a symbol of a man, not a country. Fealty to a person, not a country or a symbol standing for our democracy.
