Warning... I’m not trying to offend people or in any way condone the actions of violent lawbreakers! Genuine questions...

I don’t know much about politics, especially American politics, but isn’t protest like this the last stand of people who’s beliefs are “Nothing else is working, no-one is actually listening!” ?
The parallel I’m trying to make is... is this any different in action/deeds to the BLM riots?
Accepting that there are different targets/goals... different moral/ethical origins...Isn’t it all just pissed off people who feel that they are wronged, then taking their actions to the limit of what they see as justifiable? Is the difference between the BLM riots or this vs popular revolution the amount of people who get swept up in the moment? It’s not like they are just football hooligans out for a row...
I hope Biden can help bring about healing for America, I don’t know why it appears to be getting more and more edgy (MSM probably?)

This is a serious response - why don't you have a go at answering your own question? The fundamental differences between the two scenarios shouldn't be hard to tease out for a thinking and rational person.

Well, they could've set themselves on fire as a protest like the good old days as a proper protest.
A, it looked like a cold night and therefore would take the chill out of the air and B, a few less bubba's, chucks and mary lou's around after.....

Given the caveats I mentioned... I see no difference in their actions... aggressive lawbreaking based on an attempt to make political change.

Some of the footage this morning appears to show security (Police or Private Contractors?) removing the barriers to allow rioters into the Capitol Building - were they complicit in enabling them?

There’s no difference in the actions of this lot or ANTIFA or BLM rioting previously

Is Trump now guilty of inciting violence, rioting, civil war?

So many questions I thought I would only ask about a third world banana republic failed state - not the leader of the free world!!!

Someone needs to string that prick up

Well my original misgivings have played out and the usual partisan comments appear. This was always about faith and trust in the process not about ‘who won’ because if an election is not seen to be fair democracy loses and fast.

Trump has blown up his own cause by marching a volatile crowd of who knows what composition on the Capitol. He should have dispersed the rally away from the seat of government. Meanwhile the images from various counting halls and multiple allegations delegitimise the Democrats in the eyes of millions. It really doesn’t matter what the truth is because that well got poisoned by both sides. America’s friends shudder while her enemies gloat. Time for cool heads but business as usual won’t quite cut it either.

It all looks a bit like 1778 again. That was rough and polarised but characterised by genuine leaders of a rather sterner quality than the current offering. Joe & Kamala? Oh ‘eck........

You raise an interesting question @OldNick . I watched some of the footage yesterday as the trump supports stormed the building and I could not see a coordinated response from the police. Also why did they not put a cordon around the building to prevent them getting close?

There is a fundamental difference. Yesterday the US President was actively plotting and fomenting and encouraging the violence.

Why was there such a delay in getting the National Guard on the scene? Because Trump hoped that it would lead to an actual coup. He went AWOL during the riot, and it took the Vice President to co-ordinate with the Defense Dept, the DC authorities, and bi-partisan leadership in Congress the plan to restore order.

The man is a crook, a demagogue and a threat to the USA.

As for his followers yesterday, the usual combination of useful fools and nutjobs. Many actually with their hearts in the right place but too much time watching and absorbing Trumps lies and conspiracy theories.

And of course the violent extremists.

The costumed one is a well known Qanon activist, the one beside with barb could be Matthew Heimbach (neo nazi).
All been arrested, so I will be keen on having the list one day.
Yes all conspiracy theorists, violent, etc.
And the Qidiots are starting to spread a new lie, saying the riot was made by antifa.. Sad sad sad..

Your bang on there @Wessa and I think the whole thing spectacularly fails @Callumity ’s smell test!

Either something very sinister or something mind bogolingly stupid going on!

I didn’t think it could get any worse, and I was wrong....

How did these clowns ever get into this position?

I haven’t condoned any violence (this or BLM or any other popular revolution) but if I was at a point where I’d felt that I was being continuously wronged by the political establishment and being pushed aside, I suspect it would cause me to rebel.

The only way I can see a healing process is by all parties working towards understanding where the people are coming from (on both sides of the spectrum)... what’s driving them to these extreme paths, not by marginalising the people any more... but I don’t see that as anyone’s end goal, they are too interested in purely their own paths.

as I said previously, I hope Biden can bring about healing for America.

This coup attempt has apparently galvanized members from both sides. They stayed in session until 3:45 AM to do the will of the people on the schedule set forth by our Constitution. Bravo to all of them!

Interesting point about what has to happen next @littleade
Trump won’t walk away quietly, and the Authorites can’t allow him to walk away quietly
There has to now be a very public shaming of him in a court where each of his conspiracy theories are ripped apart

This IS going to get ugly and it’s going to be ugly for a very long time to come!

He is such a cock to have done this to the US

People often look to the sinister and fail to appreciate stupidity is far more likely.
