Have a look at JCB's website and the Hydrogen powered ICE's they've developed. Efficient large scale Hydrogen production is the main obstacle to this tech. Building or possibly even adapting existing ICE's to burn Hydrogen is relatively easy by comparison.

Yes I'm no expert but I'm sure you are correct when you say the production of Hydrogen en masse is the main current stumbling block, but although we are a savage destructive lot (us humans) we are good at developing new technologies. I recall the talk after the first energy crisis in the 70's was of us running out of fossil fuels (mainly oil) by the year 2000. I believe that prediction was based on the ability (at the time) to extract the available oil from the ground. Technology has improved in that area to the extent we can extract oil from areas that wouldn't have been possible back then. I'm a firm believer that if we place enough emphasis on solving the problem you mentioned it can be done economically. Its either that or one hell of a mountain of old batteries to dispose of if we adopt the full on electric vehicle option. Battery technology is much better than it was even ten years ago but I just don't think its good enough at the moment to jump headlong into the EV camp like we seem to be doing.
