Triumph Thunderbird Sport Ignition Coil Failure?

I make pecil coil coversion kits for t3 models. Plug and play inc looms.
Only 12v into plug cap/coil, no plug leads.

Only just seen this but the OP described classic Gill ignition coil failure. You get a low speed misfire (less than 2-2,500 rpm) spit on one cylinder and it can be hard to detect which - especially with balance pipes. It then gets progressively worse if you are slow to suss the culprit.
The very fine wire in the coil breaks and loses continuity as it expands with heat. At higher revs and marginally higher voltage it jumps the gap just as it does in the spark plug.

How are you finding the new coils from Sprint manufacturing?
I think it's time I replaced mine, not so much because of idle issues (although low revs can be lumpy at times), but because the tacho is reading wrong.
Did they solve that problem for you?
I'm sure I read somewhere that the rev counter gets its reading from one of the coils......

 

It does. I believe from number 1 cylinder.

 

Exactly the same symptoms on my 2003 Thunderbird 900. I swapped the Gill coils for PVL and its run perfectly for the last 3 years

Hi, I have a 2003 Thunderbird that developed a fault a few years ago. Changed loads of bits, no joy. Did some research and changed the coils for German made ones as the Gills had a known fault. I think they were made by PVT? many way, totally solved the running issue and it hasn’t returned after 5 years and 15,000 miles.
