    Let's get started...

First, I will always wear my seatbelt. I know they work. In a past life I was a police officer. I investigated many, many motor vehicle accidents. Seatbelts do save lives and prevent injuries.

That being said, I do not believe that government should be in the business of regulating risk taking. I believe it should be a personal choice. Just like motorcycle helmets (I wear mine even in "Free" states that don't require them).
The exceptions would be those under eighteen - to protect children.

The argument has always been that not wearing seatbelts or motorcycle helmets jacks up the costs of insurance due to medical expenses and hospital care. As well, society ends up paying when the injured are uninsured.

OK, all that is true, BUT...

If government is going to regulate risk taking, then let's ban sky diving. Except for military applications and maybe some rescue/forest fire control, recreational skydiving serves no legitimate purpose. It's just a dangerous sport that is good only for an adrenalin rush and it burns fuel for the purpose of having fun.

Let's ban bungee jumping too - extreme risk taking with no legitimate purpose.

How about skiing? Very little in the way of exercise, what with ski lifts and such. Just sliding down hills on planks and breaking limbs.

Motocross, trail biking, rock climbing, etc.

There are many other dangerous recreational activities that governments could ban/regulate because they serve no legitimate purpose (softball injuries cost the country more than motorcycle accidents).

How about unprotected extra marital or premarital sex? It spreads disease and causes unwanted pregnancies.

Excessive drinking of alcoholic beverage causes untold injuries and death. Oh, wait...we tried banning that - how'd that turn out? The Cosa Nostra says "Thanks."

Smoking cigarettes fer crying out loud!

Wait a minute...what about motorcycles? Yes, there are commuters, but let's be honest, most motorcycle riding is recreational. It can be a dangerous pass time and again, just burns fuel for fun.

OK, I'm done...let me have it.
