Mt father was 101st Airborne. Jumped out of an airplane, into the dark over enemy held territory in the early morning hours of June 6, 1944. His rifle butt struck him in the face on landing, breaking his jaw. He spent ten days in the field, unable to eat, before getting to an aid station. He lost so much weight he earned the nickname "Slim," which people called him till he passed in 1980. He never talked to us kids about the war. This was related to me by my mother.

When I graduated high school, two of my friends were going to backpack through Europe. I was telling dad about it and said they were starting in France and planned to trek all summer. All he said was "France, huh? I was there in '44. Didn't like it much."

 

I've noticed that the older I get the value of the denomination of a coin on the ground is the determining factor in deciding whether or not I'll bend down to pick it up.

I'm up to a fifty cent piece now.

What's equally annoying is going into a coffee shop and finding the person making your coffee does not know the first thing about coffee - even basic stuff like "do you have any filter coffee?" elicits a confused look as they've only been shown how to use the espresso machine. And I bet they'd make a latte and cappuccino exactly the same too... [/rant]

I honestly don't know. As I said, he didn't discuss it with us. I think there are web sites that allow you to look up past military service. I'll have to look into that. At his funeral and old friend of dad's related that he had been a marine. They had another buddy that was a sailor. If the three of them went into a bar together they would immediately get thrown out - A sailor, a marine and an army guy?
