@ bluenose, before you buy make sure you have a good LONG test ride. If you suffer from back ache you'll regret buying one as, as cost they look in showrooms it's a different story out.

I took one for a test ride and had to give it back straight away. I took it up a long windy hill which was baron and very windy. It's kind of my testing hill. The force of the wind made my back ache start instantly because all the weight runs through the spine and nothing spread over the bars especially if your legs are unnaturally forward so I chose a bonneville instead.

If your not one for buying and then selling like you said then think test first and buy with the brain not heart.

I plan to strap Celotex to me either side so when I drop it, all I here is the crunch of insulation :D or man made Styrofoam impact bags ill dangle from the handlebars.....

Or Ill drop it on one of the kids to protect the bike! (just kidding NCPCC)

I plan to test the hell out of them :D:D...As another post said/suggested ill just say I've been riding years! (to a dealer) Whether I end up with an America /LT/ Bonneville they all look awesome, as you said its the "fit". I'm definitely a man wanting comfort over performance

Noted - £1,500!!!! Jesus H Christ!!! I'm 38 not 83 (or 18!) good point to note though!

At the end of the day if the garage wants me to buy it they should let me ride it - failing that I'll sit on it for an hour making bike noises ;)

Must admit the seating position does hurt the coccyx to start with, but within a month/1000 miles i was OK. Other thing was the raised arms for me, but again got used to it. Swore I was getting new set of bars, but time passed and 1000 mile trip up to Ullapool at Easter eased me into the 'new' position (Was on sports bikes for previous 5 years). Find it really natural now and happily do 300 mile days.

Did mine at the grand young age of 40, best thing I ever did (If the missus is watching, that is after marriage and 2 kids;)).
You'll soon be racking up 150+ days and thinking nothing of it. I do 40 miles for fun, after a crappy day work, when I want to chill out:D

Search GMU2017 on here, great weekend away with the boys, not till July next year, so you'll be well sorted by then ;)

    Sounds just the ticket!

New question - discolouration on exhaust pipes, is that normal or a by product of something undesirable? No idea what to look for when I actually go out with my pennies and buy!! Seen it on some bikes not on others.....

Is there an equivalent of an AA check .... or do AA do it !?

As Mr Orange correctly pointed out - changing from boards to pegs can be extremely expensive if genuine Triumph parts are used unless like me you have these from a 2011 America

They all discolour, the one's that aren't have been cleaned!

Find a bike, then come on here and ask someone if there local and would be willing to go along and take a look. But at the nearly new / low mileage your looking at and most probably a dealer for a first time purchase, I wouldn't worry too much, very rarely do they go wrong, and nowt serious if they do. Very reliable bikes with no real regular occurring problems.

    Thanks for the re-assurance !

So discoloured pipes can be made "new" with some elbow grease!

    Learning loads chaps - thanks!

To be honest the pipes America's come with need changing anyway's (way to quiet) so dont let that change your mind at all. its all easily changed normally through choice and looks more than the normal blueing,
Another model to consider is the Speedmaster one in the same to be honest but without as much chrome bling to clean all down to what you prefer !!
There's one on here for sale and maybe give some consideration to if it meets your approval, not mine but its one hell of a looker and a 2012 model very well cared for in its heated garage(bungalow) and sporting some very tasteful paintwork

The only real difference between an America & Speed master handling wise is bar position, the difference in looks is mostly chrome ! But wheels may differ and some Speed masters have twin disc brake's up front, twin disc's is the only thing I miss on my 2008 America, as I tow trailer's I'd really appreciate better brakes. I have big bore kit , open pipes & removed everything to do with engine compliance to emissions. I have done 102,000klms on it from new.

102k wow! Typically what's the lifespan of a bike if this ilk? And are getting parts (if ever needed) available through garages / triumph or do you need to order from overseas?

Hi Blue, It's been my experience you get out what you put in, I'm a motor mechanic and very sympathetic to machinery, I over service on engines and run everything else until it's knackered ! I get 15 - 17,000 klms out of back tyre's, got nearly 70,000 out of chain & sprockets on one bike(94 trident) average 40,000 , but as soon as it's knackered it's gone !! Bike is going to get forks serviced for 4th time and new wheel bearing's soon, otherwise it is doing just fine ! On modern machines I would expect 200,000 would be achieved in many cases, my 94 trident had 161,000 up when I sold it in 2000 its still on the road and has in excess of 260,000 klms under its tyre's !
