And even the so-called Picts (folk with pictures on their skin) were so named by late Romans to differentiate the Britons north of Hadrians Wall, and especially north of the Antonine Wall, from the 'civilised' Britons to the South. The claim by Bede in his Ecclesiastical History of the English People that Picts were Gaels descended from a few folk who came over from Ireland was just made-up bollox. Picts were just less civilised Northerner versions of Tez and dilligaf ;)

Must be one of those sanitised translations. Get hold of one in the original Latin.

It's an interesting study Ron, based on sampling of 2000 individuals whose four grandparents had all been born locally (within 5 miles or so iirc). With that in mind West Yorkshire turned out to have the highest percentage of Anglo Saxon blood. Now, think of the Yorkshire folk you know, and are you surprised the French gave them a pass when it came to conjugal what have you's?

Except it IS the Daily Mail and they are more than a little wrong using terms like ‘French’. Franconia is part of modern Germany. The Romans spoke of Gaul for pretty much everyone North West of Pisa so there were Cisalpine Gauls INSIDE Italy and Transalpine Gauls OUTSIDE Italy. The French for Wales is Pays de Galles, Erse Gaelic and Scots Gaelic are Celtic/Gauls and there is academic debate about whether Celts really existed as separate people at all......did I mention the Breton (British!) French?
There WAS a general Westward migration we might blame on Goths, Visigoths, Ostrogoths and there Neolithic (New Stone Age) predecessors.......
Fascinating and a lot of it pretty unknowable since we maybe have 20% of the jigsaw.

Did I mention the French are reportedly one of the most meagre purchasers of soap in Europe?

The West Yorkshire question is probably best answered by the ancient custom of ‘Ecky Thump’!

Nah, let’s stick with your dubious parentage.......
And fix a few more things from Roman records rather than the Daily Mail Infant’s Introduction to Immigration touted by Mr O......

But the English owe a lot to the French and a fair amount to the Germans – at least as far as our genes are concerned.

For a study has mapped the genetic make-up of Britain. Researchers analysed the genetic code of 2,000 white Britons and compared the results to data on more than 6,000 people from ten European countries

They found that many of us have DNA that is 45 per cent French in origin while many white Britons are a quarter German.

Surprisingly, given that they invaded and occupied large parts of the British Isles for four centuries, there is little genetic trace of the Romans.

The Oxford University study, which examined people whose grandparents had all been born near each other and were white European in origin, revealed that Caucasian Britons can be separated into 17 distinct genetic groups.

Remarkably, many of these modern-day ‘clans’ are found in the same parts of the country as the tribes and kingdoms of the 6th century – suggesting little changed in Britain for almost 1,500 years.

Sorry, this is claimed by the ENGLISH University based in a wee town called Oxford, you may have heard of it ?
I believe all of the really clever CESMB are sent there or to another little town called Cambridge?:p

I only quibble with the simplistic use of the word ‘French’. France is a modern construct. The Norman and Plantagenet Kings of England were also Dukes of Normandy and Acquitaine......about half of modern France while the Frankish Empire went East to the Danube. We ALL came out of Central Europe and the Steppes 5-6,000 years ago.
