Second (potentially) best day of my life!

Well done and congratulations, hell of a bike you have there. I've done the Bikesafe course, its really just an assessment of your riding which they give feedback on. Its worth doing though and I did learn stuff as I had never previously had any training; In 1981 I just rolled up at the test centre on my RD 250LC on L's, did a couple of laps of a trading estate while the examiner stood by the side of the road, 1 emergency stop, 1 riding at walking pace few questions on the highway code and passed!

IAM, six sessions on the road with an experienced rider who is the Observer.

First, an assessment ride which when I Observe is two 3/4 hour sessions on the road, but it starts with a check of documents and a discussion of the first ride, after the first ride I debrief and chat for about 1/2 hour. After the second ride another debrief, discussion and honework is set, this amounts to reading the first three chapers of the IAM book and self practice

Sessions two and three introduce the riding system which is Information, Position, Speed, Gear, Acceleration forget the mirror signal manoeuver that is just for passing the Double Standards Agencys test. The second and third sessions would be two one hour rides with half hour discussions to start, in between and to end

The next two sessions ramp up the riding content and length and then there is the mock test by a different Observer and the actual test by an ex Police examiner.

So as you can see, there is a lot to it and a lot of effort is required but you can guarantee that once you have passed the IAM test your observation and riding skills will be on a much, much higher level than the average Sunday biker.

The IAM is well worth doing,both my wife and me have done it and it's defiantly improved our riding.

 

I did the IAM and it certainly helps with your all round riding and awareness, thoroughly recommend it

 

There are some right old farts in the IAM (me included!) but you don't get to be that old and a biker without being good at it.

It did a lot for me and I still practice the same approach even now and that's over 20 years on.
