I don't have any real preference against riding solo or in a group. I would say I ride about 80% on my own and 20% with my mate. Good thing about being on my own is there are no rules on where I go or how fast or slow I have to ride. Can usually find somebody to talk to if I really want to at tea/coffee stops. The best thing about riding with a mate is that you always have someone to discuss the ride with....

Terrific photos, Frecklechops! :) A fun thread and a great question!

I like riding both alone or in a group. I'd say, though, that I've really come to enjoy riding alone for the simplicity of it. I do enjoy riding with a small(er) group of riding buddies that I've ridden with numerous times as we not only like to hang out for coffee, etc. during the ride but we each know how the other rides and we ride well together. I've come to not really enjoy riding with a group that has more than about 4-5 riders in it.

That all said, my favorite is to ride with my hubby, just the two of us. That's how I started riding and it's still my favorite. What's funny is that I's say I like to ride a bit more than he does and I get out on my bike more than he does so I wind up riding on my own on those days that he doesn't care to ride or has other things going on.

An interesting thread, this one, cos I thought I was the only one who was didn’t enjoy group ride-outs.

I went on my first ride-out few years ago and was not overly impressed, with most co-riders settling in groups. I even ended up being the only one at my table during a pub-break as there was not a single space vacant on other tables. To add to that, I have this super-natural power to be invisible i.e. people tend to forget my presence. One of the riders whom I had chatted with before we set-out, comes up to me during the pub halt and re-introduces himself all over again. WTF!!

Ride solo most of the time. My wife says ‘others will be interested in you if you are interested in them’- never could I understand this logic.

Time to create a group for people who enjoy riding solo :joy:

Hey, Frecklechops, I ride a Harley in addition to a Triumph and around where I live that's not my experience at all. And the Harley riders don't just wave to me when I'm on a Harley. They wave to me when I'm on my Speed Triple too.

"Time to create a group for people who enjoy riding solo". That's brilliant! There's a motorcycle club in Tucson called The Loners. Mr. Sandi and I scratch our heads over that one every time we see a guy with a Loners patch which is always at a group event. A loner who's part of The Loners hanging out at a motorcycle gathering..... :p

After going on several rideouts with folks from another forum I quickly found their pace irritating and dangerous. So much that heading back once I let them get so far ahead I turned off when they could no longer see me and went my own way home at my own pace. Left a "sorry about that" a post on the rideout thread when home and more than one of them replied they'd not even noticed I dropped off... Thanks for the camaraderie guys.

Have been a solo rider ever since and quite happy to be so.

I don't ride on the road anymore, but when I did I nearly always rode in a group, most of the time I lead, this suits me as there is nobody dictating the pace of the ride except me, normally the group was between 4 & 6, occasionally much more than this, when going abroad normally at least 10. When riding in larger groups with mixed abilities then we used 'dead mans corner' where every time we turn off we leave a rider at the junction to point the way, this means you have to have a dedicated rear marker for the whole ride.

If I am honest, I find riding alone a bit boring, but prefer to ride in a small group of similar abilities, just makes for a more flowing ride, and you have a couple of mates to talk it over with over a brew.

This is probably true because there’s so many people who are only interested in themselves.

I have ridden both in groups usually the same people so you get to know each others abilities and I usually would be 'tail end charlie' and end up playing chase and not really appreciating the view.I also like to ride alone so the pace is mine and not governed by the guy in front.

Can only tell you that if you are not a Campbell. Think its around may I will find out and let you know. My mate has booked a cottage and we are going to use it as our base. Really I should be up on this but I am the type of rider that likes to tag along and let others do the arrangements that suits them as I find I can adjust to all types but I am looking forward to it. I will find out more and let you all know.
    Ride Safe & Enjoy

I really enjoy riding green lanes with others, but prefer to do tarmac riding by myself. There is def advantages to numbers when playing in the dirt as you are more likely to fall off or get stuck. On the road though, I worry about the people I am riding with if leading and when following you really have to trust in their ability when making progress! :)

Bahaha!! My ex rode a harley :p
I'm just very happy to have a bike that I paid for upfront. Even if she is 15! She can still haul ass!

I usually prefer to ride on my own, or with a couple of others. My best biker friend (whose name is also Sarah, and lives in the same town as me) and I often ride together. We have our wee route that we go on (the one I went on the night I took the pics) and like stopping along the way to get a coffee or occasionally fish and chips (Anstruther has award winning fish and chips if anyone's ever in the area! Waterfront chippy!)

I enjoy riding with her. She's fast though, and I used to go out with her on my 125cc too. She would just go for a wee blast ahead and then wait for me to catch up lol now I can keep up with her!
We went to the Thunder in the Glens festival last year together. But I think it's good if you have someone to ride with who is considerate, knows how you ride and doesn't put any pressure on you to ride a certain way. If you're overreaching and taking risks to keep up with folks, that's the best way to kill yourself on a bike.

I also go out with a larger group of mostly guys. But they're all sensible riders and nobody does any silly things and we all make sure we look out for each other. So most of my group riding has been positive.
To be honest, most of my solo riding is out of necessity. Sometimes it's tricky getting folk together last minute when the evening turns out nice.

Saying that, I've had a couple of negative experiences. Once with a group I'd never ridden with before. The two 'lead' riders shot off, I was on my 125 at the time, and some of the slower riders got left behind. Plus one of the other 125s insisted on riding right next to me (not staggered and slightly behind like you should) and in Scotland the roads are not as wide as in the US, I found it very offputting and I told him it was dangerous. He wrote his brand new MT125 off a couple weeks later, I wasn't surprised  (He was OK).

The other time was me, Sarah and another lassie from our women's MCC. I dunno whether she was just having a bad day or what, but she was on a Div, and I was on my 125, and I was WAY ahead of her. She was incredibly slow, painfully slow. But I think she let her anxiety get the better of her. I would much prefer to ride with people who can keep at least to 5mph below the speed limit though.

All in all, I've met some great folks through motorbiking.
I'm heading up to the Fort William area next month via Glencoe with a bunch of the ladies from the EWMCC, Overnight camping expedition, so that'll be fun!

Do the bikes not come with indicators either?

Not that well-off that they can afford indicators and courteousness as an added extra, apparently.
