This is Bob. He is a neon.

I have come to the conclusion that Bob is immortal, a demigod.

Bob is the sole occupant of our ten-gallon aquarium. The tank used to have a bunch of fish. There were a half dozen neons, like Bob, angel fish, mollies, a Plecostomus, the usual suspects. We made the determination that once all the fish slipped the bonds of their watery world, we were not going to replenish the population and get rid of the tank. The fish all passed, except for Bob. Tropical fish have varying life expectancies. Goldfish, for instance, can live ten years. Most of the former occupants were three to four years old when they finally passed, including the other neons. Not Bob, though. He soldiers on. It's been three years that Bob has been living his lonely life, which means he's about six years old. He's named Bob after singer Bobby Vinton, who sang "Mr. Lonely."

I'm not a bad person, but I want to get rid of the damned tank. I've had murderous thoughts. Thoughts of hastening Bob's demise. I mean, he's just a fish, right? A dose of chlorine bleach in the water, or some caustic chemical. Hire a hit man? But I can't do it. My family would suspect foul play and never forgive me, nor would I forgive myself. I won't do it. He's a survivor. Yet, every morning when he pops out of the little castle decoration at feeding time, I find myself cursing.

I'm beginning to think Bob will outlive me.

Sorry for the rant. I had to get this off my chest.
