Just watched the remake of True Grit. Funnily enough I actually like it. I love the original, but I can also enjoy this one !!!!
She's weird, cos most remakes are a waste of celluloid:confused:

Mr. Sandi and I just watched an awesome documentary called ZZ Top: That Little Ol' Band from Texas. Great fun and I never knew just how influential these guys were back in their earlier days. Check out the trailer.

The last film I watched was "Leave No Trace" (2018) a couple of evenings ago. It was done by the same director and screenplay writer as "Winter's Bone". I liked it a lot. That said, some of it hit a little too close to home during these COVID-19 times--primarily the isolation of the two main characters.

I watched it for the Women's Movie Club I'm in which has been going on for 18 years. We "met" yesterday evening via Zoom. We usually go to the home of whomever is hosting that month, bring some wine or adult beverage, have dinner (provided by the host), and watch a movie that the host has chosen. We then discuss the movie and generally catch up with each other.

This time around the host set up a Zoom meeting and e-mailed us ahead of time with the movie title and where we could access it. It worked out ok but certainly wasn't the same as hanging out with one's friends over drinks and dinner. This time around we spent more time talking about the state of the world right now rather than the movie. The best thing about "meeting" on Zoom was that I could have my choice of cocktail (I chose a Manhattan--well, two) and wasn't beholden to drink white wine. :joy::joy:

BTW, if any of you are in or have a spouse who is in a book club, I think a movie club is a lot better even though I love to read. No need to read the book chapters ahead of time which I think is way too much like homework! With movie club, you just show up, beverage in hand. No muss, no fuss. ;):grinning:

Mr. Sandi and I have watched three seasons of The Wire. Yeah, we're behind the times. But we took a break to start watching Season 3 of Ozark. "Start"? We binge-watched the whole series in three evenings!. Of course now we get to wait a year or two for Season 4 to come on. :joy: Oh, no specific spoiler but Season 3 ended with quite a bang! ;)

We recently got TVOB (TV Only Better) installed on the Amazon stick I've had for a couple of years.

Initially it all looked good with a raft of TV suppliers showing hundreds - literally - of movies and box sets. The reality has been that our broadband (I presume) is unable to deliver the kind of download capacity to make much of the streaming viable. Despite being on a 'fibre to the cabinet' connection we're getting 20 - 25 Mbps download speeds on tests and I suspect that running the tv wirelessly to the router just exacerbates an already poor situation.

Anyway, one of the channels available is Disney+ which was, for me, a real find as I've been wanting to see the Star Wars spin-off "THE MANDALORIAN" since I first saw teasers from it late last year. This is a made-for-TV series by LucasFilms featuring a warrior clan bounty hunter roaming the outer edges of the 'Star Wars universe'. The main character seems to be very strongly based on the Clint Eastwood western characters from the early spaghetti westerns - he even uses similar voice inflections - and there are some fairly big name co-stars such as Nick Nolte, Carl Weathers, Werner Herzog et al.

I did, eventually, manage to watch the full set of 10 episodes in Series 1, despite frequent and very frustrating buffering, and was very impressed by the high standard of CGI and live action in the finished products. The scale and production values/finished product of the series are much more cinema than tv although the story lines are somewhat predictable.

Each episode runs around 45 minutes, ad-free. Thoroughly recommended and enjoyable IF you're a Star Wars (rather than Trek) kind of person!

I tried to watch the Mandalorian, I really did but I found it to be just plain shit.
The lead was completely dead pan boring and the plot was more elusive than Lord Lucan. Just not for me. Glad you liked it though and obviously plenty of others do too. Maybe I'm just too picky these days.

I thought so too. I wanted to go and see it on the big screen but my missus doesn't do war films so I asked a mate to go. He read the critics views and they panned it so he wouldn't go, what a fool, I told him he was a twat.

I started my Godfather boxset yesterday, Godfather 2 this afternoon and 3 tomorrow, I haven't seen any of them for at least ten years, then we rode through Taormina on Sicily last year and I decided I'd have to dig them out...didn't expect to be watching them in this situation though! Maybe after that I'll watch Goodfellas, for some reason I've never seen it. I may give the Irishman a go but DD put me off a bit.

I'll give it a go and let you know lol. I have to watch these kind of films on my own as the wife isn't into them...which is good as it means I actually get to concentrate on them :)

We watched "The Gentlemen" and it was pretty good if you like Guy Richie films, and we do.
