WHOA - straight out of left field ....

I watched a NETFLIX movie last night that was ... hmmmmm ... different; weird; violent; explicit (sexually and graphically) and VERY difficult to categorise.

The movie was called "POLAR"; stars Mads MIKKELSEN ('Le Chiffre' in Casino Royale) and features Matt LUCAS - yes, that (Little Britain) Matt LUCAS!! I saw a trailer/teaser and thought it would be a straightforward action movie, the kind of thing to watch while SWMBO is out at work - lots of guns and fighting, a fair bit of feminine eye candy and a car chase or two - but, in reality, though they do all feature, they're not always portrayed in quite the usual format. Some of the cinematography is strikingly presented - near monochrome scenes highlighted by super saturated colours of bright red lipstick and a red satin dress, for example, and a lot of the action and violence is punctuated or emphasised by inappropriate humour!

The plot line isn't at all unusual - top assassin wants to retire along with a huge payoff/pension but his 'employers' want the pension money and want his retirement to be pre-empted by his permanent demise.

There are twists that aren't exactly a huge surprise or a leap of the imagination, and most of the characters are comic book - not surprising as the credits mention the film being based on a 'graphic novel', I think.

Overall, though, it's well made and entertaining and, if you're into guns, gore, girls and gratuitous violence this might hit all the G spots! Just don't put it on when the kids are still up and around ..........................

EDIT :- looks like my personal view of the film is not exactly in tune with those of the majority of pro. critcs/reviewers! Caveat emptor?

A big fat sweaty Bollocks to the critics ! Make a film about a one eyed crippled trans something or other pair of cowboys falling in love (??) and they'll love it !
You and I watch a film and we either like it or we don't.

critics are just Social Justice Warriors telling us what to approve of and what to condemn. Think for yourself and listen to friends.

its hard to find, but Amazon carries it for rent ....I watched "Ride with the Wind " starring Craig T Nelson as an ageing privateer flat track racer getting a final shot at a winning season. Good bike/track action and almost the whole movie takes place in a garage.

Amazon are doing what they’re allowed to get away with.
The downside of this is the probability that most retail outlets will have to shut up shop ‘ literally ‘ because business rates are scandalous compared to web sales companies.
The after affects for Amazon. “If no one has a job who’s going to be able to buy from you” vicious circle!

Brother, Wal=Mart has been killing small businesses for years. I hate them, but every once in a while I find myself inside one.

Yes, we are all guilty. So when the high street shops disappear, we will all knowingly say “ what happened?”
Honestly we need to rectify this erosion now before it’s too late to make a difference ( by the way ido NOT have an Amazon account)

I fear it may be too late Ken,the goverment should have added an extra tax for goods that are getting sold online, but i don't suppose anybody could have forecast how big online shopping would become. puts a spanner in the works though for shopkeepers who own their own property and had hoped to sell the business or rent out the property..unless they can rent out to a Hairdresser/beauty salon or a Cafe, as currently you cant get your haircut or have a coffee online!!

Les Miserables on BBC, I think is brilliant, 2 episodes in and not a song to be heard

Never too late to make a ‘u’ turn on policy. If only any government had the balls to face up to these giants in commerce.

Even if the big boys were forced to pay their taxes i'm not sure if that would make any differance to the High Streets..it would really need to be an extra tax for selling online, doing away with rates for shops would help but it's not the answer..If i knew the answer i'd be a Billionaire!!

Sorry I derailed this train with Amazon stuff. I like Victorian era/Boer War/ Empire-ish films if there are any recommendations out there. I recently watched The man who would be king and it was great; as well as Zulu, but after those the genre gets a bit thin.
