"Special", hmmm. Oh, yes, I know that term well. I was a special ed teacher and am now a school psychologist. Interestingly, over the years different words have been used to denote "retarded" though I think that's the most universally understood! Of course, after a new term or label is used for awhile, it eventually takes on the same meaning as previously used labels so the clinical terms get updated every couple of decades, lest they become politically incorrect. The currently acceptable term is Intellectually Disabled (Mildly, Moderately, or Severely). Check out the article in this link for some of the early labels that were actually accepted and used clinically. I think you will find the words somehow familiar. The Clinical History of 'Moron,' 'Idiot,' and 'Imbecile' https://www.merriam-webster.com/words-at-play/moron-idiot-imbecile-offensive-history As a gentle reminder, take heed of this quote from the article: "we hope no one reading this would be so callous as to try to resurrect their use". Not that anyone on this forum would do such a thing.
I get called those names all the time. The jokes on the dolts that presume to use such old fashioned words in a modern (and enlightened) world. They should just call me a fuck wit.
An interesting article Sandi, I upon reflection withdraw 'special & retarded', if I was being callous I would probably suggest that @BB3Lions is quite possibly a Moron, while I still believe @Ron Ashurst is in the unique 'Fecktard' category! 1. Idiots.—Those so defective that the mental development never exceeds that or a normal child of about two years. 2. Imbeciles.—Those whose development is higher than that of an idiot, but whose intelligence does not exceed that of a normal child of about seven years. 3. Morons.—Those whose mental development is above that of an imbecile, but does not exceed that of a normal child of about twelve years. If I have offended anyone in this post, I blame @Dozers Dad as I went his training course "being PC in the Snowflake Generation - NOT"
Mongo Joey Edit; This Mongo... Blazing Saddles... Still, I haven’t heard the Mungo Summertime song for ages.
Yeah it was Blue Peter, it’s terrible looking back on it with a (slightly) more mature lens. Definitely wouldn’t happen now (I hope). Strange that bullying & being so nasty was rife back then. We could be awful but often not realise the impact of our words or actions. An example at our school would be a rumour that two ‘unusually challenged’ students (a Joey called Ivor and was pretty much set up by his parents from birth with that name, and smelly pant wetting girl) kissed. For decades the paving stone where it happened (it didn’t) was ‘jumped’ over for fear of getting ‘fleas’.... this happened long after the protagonists had left! The kids eventually had no idea of the original rumour or why they all jumped the paving stone. It only stopped when they tarmac’d over the path.
