K&n Oil Filter Failure

    Looks like a corrosion issue to me. Filter looks like a 2 year old.( I know it's not from what you have said) Do you do a lot of wet riding? Or live near the sea? Good luck with K & N but I think based on the photo evidence they will try & swerve this one

    Bugger! I ordered a new filter for my Tiger 800, and just received the email saying it's on it's way...

    Guess what type I ordered...

    Wish I'd come across this thread two days ago and I would've gone for a different make. I wonder if the supplier will take it back.

    Hope the damage is minimal, top end only. That is exactly what happened to mine- partial seize on one cylinder. Damage to barrel and piston only and the filter looked like it had been on the bike five years. It was 5 months!!
    Get an engineer or mechanic to look at the filter(independent verification), they will be able to tell right away that it is a failed part. Take pics and video, then contact K&N. They will want you to send filter for them to examine. Take pics of bike damage and get quote for parts and work.
    Like I stated, K&N were very easy to deal with, and stumped up very quickly for my repairs. I have received a letter recently stating that a batch of these filters have been recalled due to manufacturing faults.

    Surely they’re leaving themselves wide open to legal cases being brought.

    I did see somewhere else think it was a bike related Facebook group k+n have issued a recall,there are serial numbers to check so they are apparently aware of the issue and have took some action.

    I just bought a genuine Triumph oil filter for my ST off eBay for £10, can’t really get my head around why anyone would fit an aftermarket piece of shit, when a proper one is so cheap.

    Great, are they going to pay for labour and fresh oil, no thought not. Their “recall” is worthless

    Only just bothered to read this thread and all i can say is i strongly suspect that the R&D on the filter design it was deemed that the spot welds where sufficient to gently tighten the filter should a spanner be used... (not defending K&Ns design just my opinion)
    my take is that i have never used anything more than my hand to tighten an oil filter on any vehicle its not necessary...sure i have had to use strap wrenches to loosen them as they tighten with use, most filters that actually have a nut and not many have them tend to be formed from the filter body but again its really intended for removal.

    IMG_0061.JPG So I'm guessing there's no point offering this for sale (one careful owner, never been used...). It isn't from the bad batches, but I couldn't risk using it, so probably heading for the bin.

    But being a Jock, it'll probably stick to my fingers and I won't be able to let it go, and it'll live in the drawer until my kids clear the house after I've gone.

    That just sucks! I have wondered about that nut before, but never used that kind of filter before. It could have been worse though, you could have posted this from a hospital bed!

    Obviously very sorry for those who had problems. I have used K&N for 40+ years. I truly believe it was a one time manuf issue that has been fixed. K&N could not stay in business unless they properly addressed the quality issue. I continue to use K&N on all my vehicles. Cars and bikes.

    Ummm it’s an oil filter just use a genuine filter what they cost like £10-12 never put anything but triumph on mine you know it’s right then, k and n oil filters offer no performance increase what so ever

    I would never ever use any oil filter than a original manufacturer recommended item if a aftermarket fails bye bye engine thankfully in 42 years and 50 bike never had one go pop

    I noticed I had a K&N filter with the brazed nut on fitted to the TT600. That got changed at the weekend along with the oil. Got a good deal from M&P with a free HiFlo filter with my oil.

    I experienced the exact same thing 2 years ago but it happened when I stopped to put some petrol in the tank. When starting and when I was driving off I feelt it was a bit skiddy so looked down..(filter is mounted under the engine) and saw the puddle of oil.

    Just glad that didn't happen while driving.
    My filter had broke where the nut is and while I want to say that K&N is shite I do realise that the oil filter is located in a very exposed place. One little rock or something similar and it damage it.

    So....I gave K&N the finger .... for a few months and then realised that it could prob happen to any old filter.
    So started using them again and haven't had any issues.

    It does seem tho that the new one I got look slightly different from the old one that broke.

    Wow!, Glad I dredged up this old thread! I have always used Amsoil oil filters on my bikes, but have been using K&N on my Ford Explorer since I got it six years ago. It's an 06, but it's in great shape. I use the K&N specifically for the nut on the can. Ford put the oil filter on this truck in a very hard to access spot. The best way to get it off is with a stubby ratchet on that nut. Even at that you have to be a contortionist! I just changed the oil a few weeks ago. Now I'm worried! I will keep an eye on it and no longer use K&N filters.

    Great to find this out. Just fitted a K&N w few weeks ago. I'll purchase a different one and swap it.
