Ideas for luggage?

Or just do what more and more riders are doing. Tow a trailer. Plenty of space. I can put 100kg in mine behind my 2008 America..... !

100kg! !!! Are you planning to get away for a very long time

 

That's my limit as in Australia the towed trailer cannot weigh more than 70% of the vehicle towing it, trailer weighs 45kg so 145kg bike weighs 230kg 70% of that is 160kg as absolute max..! I also have a camper trailer it 117kg empty, so much less can be carried as a load.

 

If you need to carry that much!......
You ever thought of buying a car?

I own a car! Here in Australia it can be over 240 klms between petrol stations. That's petrol stations not Towns ! So you might need to carry more than spare jocks and a tooth brush !! Don't you recon ????

As you say, Australia slightly different environment.
Would be fun filtering through all our traffic/narrow lanes with a trailer in tow.

 

My trailers are two Wheeler's, you guys have the mono trailer ! So filtering wouldn't be to much hassle with one of those ! I believe they are limited to about 50kg load capacity, still much better than couple of tank bags and saddle bags ? I've found towing is much better handling wise than an overloaded bike, plus dump the trailer in under 60sec and you are back to two wheels as it was Ment to be!!

 

What's the issue with fitting with a tail tidy? keep looking at this kit but ain't go the oe fugly tail any more

 

Maximum load I ever carried is 40 kgs on 6000 miles trip over 10 Days. This was in Europe , so facilities were available throughout the journey (washing , food, lodging etc). As Capt said, if facilities are scarce for miles then I guess loading more on would be sensible .

 

I'm not sure but wouldn't the underseat seat exhaust heat interfere with the Givi side bags. Maybe be worthwhile putting a call through to Givi with a set up you have in mind

 

Hi Carter, can't give a definitive answer as to whether there's any problems with your tail tidy but I assume it mounts on the original bolt fixings of the standard plate hanger, depends on its shape whether it fouls the two stud brackets needed for the Givi frame that also mount there. I've uploaded a bunch of photos which should help you decide.

The Givi fitting instructions are here and help to explain.
I usually run with pillion pegs and pannier frame removed, the only part that stays on the bike is the stud brackets (with a bit of black sleeving over the studs to hide them). Takes half hour tops to re-fit pegs and frame.
The Arrow cans are a bit wider than standard but still just about clear the panniers, not had any problems with heat.
Generally pleased with them....but have had one problem which hopefully is a one off, I had one pannier fall off after going over a sunken manhole cover. It was a BIG bump! The pannier survived remarkably well with only cosmetic damage and simply refitted allowing us to continue with the holiday, eventually I got Givi to replace it under warranty.
The wife's recently changed her bike to a Street Triple and I intend fitting the same to hers.

 

Looking through the destrucrions I think I'd get away with it...might just have a little flex in the studs as there's nothing for the brackets to rest on, as it does the oe tail tidy. nothing I can't sort with a long threaded rod. gonna have to bite the bullet and grab a set for myself I think! cheers for the info.

 

I've fitted a SW Motech top box rack and Givi Blade top box. Combined with a Kreiga tank bag system, everything is secure and waterproof. Then when you get there it's 5 seconds to remove top box and away you go. Doesn't seem to upset bike's handling too much, even with top box loaded up for a few days away. And when you leave the bike you don't have to worry about someone nicking your kit!
I'm sure style aficionados will moan, but I think my set up looks ok. I call it the Speed Triple Touring

 

My brother had the Givi top box on his ktm 990 on the trip. He had the tools in there n we got in a real mess. As we were riding through some crappy weather conditions . ....the top box lock jammed. After smacking it silly we managed to open it. It could have been a one off faulty box. Just a thought . ...it might be a good idea to keep those locks lubed at all times ; -)

 

Overall I found an Alurack with a 40lt drybag to be the easiest solution.
I've used Kriega but found the 40lt a bit fiddly at times,plus you have to unpack/repack every day,OK for a couple of days stay over but a pain for one night.
2 Rocstraps and it's on.
It doesn't look to bad with the luggage off,some people didn't even notice it was on there.

P.S. As the Speed has been sold the rack is now for sale

 

I've had my eye on the Givi panniers for awhile, but now I see the hangers might not be compatible with my custom tail tidy. Col_C, can you snap a photo from underneath (a similar angle to this one) or at least take a look at this and tell me if those stud brackets mount to the same location as my plate hanger?





You see the problem is I'm quite happy with how "tidy" my tail tidy looks



The plate hanger bolts to the two rear-most locations where the factory fender mounts.

 

Hi muzhik, you can't see anything of the bracket from underneath (standard plastic covers it all), the only visible parts are what you can see in the second photo I posted above. Also if you follow that link just below the photos you'll get the Givi fitting instructions, page 4 shows the brackets mount to the 4 bolt holes that the standard plate hanger mounts off.
Looking at your photos your license plate is going to be in the way.

 

Thanks, Col. I suppose I can turn my license plate bracket around either direction and/or fabricate something else up (worse case) should I decide to get luggage some day.

 

Wow posted that a while ago but yes the Blaze panniers worked great on the Speed Triple. The simple support bar unclipped when not in use leaving the back of the bike looking stock. Wife still uses hers on her Street Triple. The SW Motech Sport tank bag with tank ring also worked well with my 2012 bike.

 

+1 for the Blaze panniers and tank bag,although if you have the Arrow exhausts you might find you have to lower them by about an inch to allow the bar to fit (no problems with the standard exhaust as they sit slightly lower)
