I spend a fair bit of time in the Peak District, although again, tier 4 has knackered that one, otherwise l'd be there now. Had to put off a few days in the Brecons too . Last few times been doing the gritstone edges. Looking south along Stanage Edge: Looking across to Win Hill from Bamford Edge. Best view to effort ratio in Derbyshire l reckon
Been a "hillwalker" for some 30+ years now. A regular fishing holiday destination for the last 17 years (not this year unfortunately) is a campsite at Loch Lomond so I've done Ben Lomond several times, both with my Collie when she was still around and a couple of times since she passed. I like Ben Lomond as you start virtually at sea level (+40 ft I think) so you get the full 3200+ft climb. Never done it in Winter though which I would like to do. I live on the doorstep of the Peak District so there's some good walks to be had locally but it gets very busy on a sunny Sunday or Bank holiday. Back in the '80's you could walk all day and see barely a handful of people. We were out on Tuesday at Upper Derwent in the snow, very poor visibility on the open moor so my trusty Silva compass came in handy!
Lower pic looks like the track from Lockerbrook Farm. Turn right there for Alport Castles? Another favourite of mine
That's where we headed, the path up to Alport Castles, then down Ditch Clough to the Westend of Howden (with a bit of a detour on Westend Moor after missing the turnoff in bad visibility). A quick bearing/heading check with the map and compass got us back on track A bit of back to basics navigating adds to the enjoyment IMO.
Stanage Edge was my first real taste of hillwalking as a teenager back in the 70's. Caught the bus to Redmires, then up past the pole to Stanage Edge, across to Bamford Edge, then down into Bamford and a walk to Castleton the catch the bus home. Nowadays, in fine weather, Stanage Edge is like walking down High Street!
