So I went down to the garage today to come to work on my bike and thought I’d try Phoebe’s as well to see if it was still playing up...it started and rev’d fine (although still going to change the caps) BUT it wouldn’t show how much petrol was in the tank???

I know this is a stupid thing but any ideas why not? I took it around the car park a couple times to see if it would work it out but nothing...?

Am I just not being patient enough and have to take it for a bit longer spin?

Anyway, more advice would be even more greatly appreciated!

It never rains but pours eh haha!

I have no idea how long it should take to show a level but pretty quickly, I imagine. They are generally simple devices and yours has an in tank float on a lever arm (like most cars) that creates a variable electrical resistance as it rises and falls which in turn actuates the gauge with however many bars in the display.

Faults.....sender unit, gauge or connections. I would be checking under the tank for a dislodged wire. Beyond that, it is probably a dealer fix.

Ye Gods! A replacement sender unit is £125. I would expect £25 for a Mini and £50 for a Jag!

Fingers crossed it is just a bad connection.

If its like mine, it can take a couple of miles.

Same with my '17 T100. After filling up it takes a while for the bars to update and the miles-to-empty creeps up over a few miles. Was disconcerting at first but I've just got used to it. Although it's fine once the level has stabilised and registers the right values once I restart. If you've had the battery disconnected it may be different.

AndyC1 has a good eye!! I looked at the video a couple of times (full screen mode) and I did see the spark toward the rear of the plug at @17 seconds into the video. Everyone is probably right about the plug ends on the wires, but the insulator (white porcelain) on the plug could also be cracked and causing the problem. If the plug ends don't solve the problem, you might want to also replace the plugs.

Ref the fuel gauge reading, I've always assumed there's software intervening between float and gauge, when you've got your knee down halfway round that roundabout with bike at 60° ;) fuel level in the tank is going to be different to sitting at the traffic lights waiting for your GP start. So I guess it takes an average over a time/distance span to give a steady reading - hence the delay.
And it takes a while to display any reading if battery has been disconnected (or ecu reset if memory serves correct).

I don't know if it's the same as the Tiger but if you fill up it will still register empty when the bike is restarted. The gauge is activated by pulling in the clutch so it takes a good few gear changes to show the correct level. This explains why some owners have no fuel gauge after fitting after-market levers - you have to get specific ones that activate the switch.

Quick update, took the ST out for a longer spin this morning and the fuel gauge worked itself out so thanks for the pointers!!!

The spark plug caps carried on playing up so when I get a chance will pop to Halfords and change them over and hopefully that'll sort all the problems out!

On a different note...I'd forgotten how nice the ST is to ride, much easier and smoother than my Scrambler!!! Anywho, thanks for all the help chaps!

I'll update once I've done the caps...here's a pic from the trundle this morning...

Just thought I'd give a quick update...

So I ordered the plug caps but unfortunately they didn't fit. The triumph ones are really tall so the replacements weren't long enough to reach the spark plug. They may make longer ones but I couldn't find them!! So if you're looking to replace the ST plug caps, look else where!

But, in the meantime I found out that the bike was still in warranty which was a result!!! So took it into Jack Lilley today for them to fit new plug caps and hopefully that'll sort it!

Although the horn has now packed up so they've ordered a replacement so she'll have to go back in for that at some point.

But fingers crossed we're over the little niggles now as we're off to Wales for a few days on the bikes in a couple of weeks!

    Enjoy the sun chaps!
