Agree. Stationary engines were designed by engineers to be stationary. They are slow revving, unstressd heavy lumps designed to run for long periods of time driving pumps, etc, not for moving along at speed in a motorbike frame ! Did anybody ever win a race in the TT using a stationary engine powering a featherbed frame ?? If so, I stand corrected.

But still sounds like a stoopid idea to me.

Use your engineering prowess to build something innovative, stylish, useful, which this idea does not sound any of those things. Sorry, just an opinion from and engineer ( i have bits of paper to prove it, and some letters after my name, but never used them as I thought people who did were a bit desperate).

Asbo uses a lightweight high revving engine to go fast, as fast is something useful.
Why don't you take it out, get an old cement mixer and transplant the engine into Asbo? People will then stop and talk to you for ages about how feckin stupid it was to build a 3 wheeled car, that was cold, you got wet and was as slow as a snail with a hernia !

I'm all for wacky, I had a Bond Bug for 15 years. But spending time and energy on a bike with possibly the worst engine is just plain daft. IMHO.

 

Fixing is the best bit
Been doing wee stuff on the ST, and loving it. Just got a link pipe for the exhaust to remove a silencer, can't wait to fit and unleash the noise

 

Take no notice of the negativity
This sits in my garage collecting dust
It was a Honda GX240 engine obtained with permission from work
I for some reason long forgotten had an urge to make an air engine
Had an idea about messing with the valve timing to make it work and the only way to see if it would work was to just do it and put it into practice
Well it worked
Took it home and showed my wife and son who were suitably UNimpressed and so I just pushed it into the corner of the garage and forgot about it
I for one fully understand your mates desire to do something he’s not done before and it doesn’t matter if others mock and pour scorn on him
Tell him from me the only way he’ll get rid of the urge is to do it
And VERY satisfying it is to
Keep us informed as to how he’s doing with the project
Better still would be lots pictures and dialogue on the build by yourself or himself

 

I'm with Mr Orange on this one.
Good luck to the guy and I appreciate his enthusiasm but that does not stop it being a stupid idea in my book. Attempting to put a heavy, low power output engine into a bike frame seems to be the opposite of what motorcycle engineering is about.
Save yourself the trouble and buy a Royal Enfield diesel!
They always get people talking - the conversation usually starts with "What the f*ck is that?"

Yeah great show but so set up. I went to plenty of scrap yards back in the day - when you could turn up with your tool box and clamber over the cars. Looking for bits for my MkII Cortina.

No I don't necessarily think it is the point, although as I've said I wish him all the best with it. Sometimes there is a reason why things have not been done before - because it either won't work or it's just a daft idea.
I don't recall a motorbike being powered by 4 in-line Moulinex food blender motors or a potters wheel but that in itself us not a good enough reason to try and do it.

 

I'm not hating on anyone mate, as I said I really do wish him well and wouldn't discourage anyone from trying something different. However, it still seems a daft idea to me. There is a reason why they are called stationary engines!

 

By pure coincidence, I've just watched a repeat of Shed and Buried and guess what was on it? A Lister stationary engine!
How big will the frame need to be to accommodate one and how will he damp down those vibrations? It appears to be thumping itself into the ground. Interesting problems ahead!

 

I would love to see it and just cant imagine it I dont mean it to be horrible just sceptical or questioning
