Losing weight or changing your lifestyle is a mindset more than anything. Short term diets don't work because they do nothing to tackle the root cause of what got you into the state you're in now. A few days fasting simply isn't long enough for your mind to start thinking healthy. I tell my girlfriend this all the time - all that's gonna happen is you'll lose "weight" (I put it in commas because you're not really), and then you'll go back to eating again and almost overnight you'll gain the weight back on.

Fact is, everyone is different and there is no one-size-fits-all solution. Up until last year I was gaining weight fast, and I was depressed. I tried short-term diets that didn't work. I joined a gym but didn't go. I bought healthy foods but didn't eat them. Eventually I stumped up and went to a PT so that I had someone who would *make me* exercise, ask what I'm eating, recommend alternatives to the crap. It's been almost a year and whilst I'm still nowhere near my target (which is basically to look good naked) I managed to get back into my suit trousers the other day which I was f*king delighted with.

I'm now eating breakfast (which I *never* used to do), a salad for lunch (instead of the KFCs), a healthy snack (instead of a chocolate biscuit), and a relatively healthy dinner (I get Hellofresh delivered). I still eat shit, I have to, I'm hopelessly addicted to sugar, but I can get away with it now because I'm eating better during the day. And it will take time. If you're expecting results in days, you are going to be disappointed. Start thinking in years.

I know this doesn't directly answer the OPs question of "has anyone tried fasting", I just fancied a wee rant. But on that subject, fasting sounds like the absolutely worst idea. Ever. Don't do it. Please speak to a professional, even if it's one of those internet PTs. No responsible pro would ever recommend you stop eating. On the contrary my PT would regularly castigate me for not eating enough.

Reminds me of the time I was making a carrot cake. It had all kinds of stuff in it including crushed pineapple to make it nice and moist. Anyway, I'd put the cake in the oven and was cleaning up when I came across the bowl of grated carrots that I'd forgotten to put in the cake !

Firstly, good luck with your fasting and giving up smoking.

If it's healthy your after, my wife highly recommends a book called "How not to die". Sounds dramatic, and I guess he's safe from being sued, because by the time you find out it doesn't literally work, you're... well... not to put too fine a point on it... Dead.

But joking aside, she thinks it's really well written, makes a lot of sense, and she's following it closely. I am following it by osmosis (either I eat what she cooks or I cook it myself), and have lost another 5 lbs over the 15 lbs I lost by retiring and becoming a lot more physically active.

That's the stuff, eat what you want and follow up with a pint of rough cider and it won't be in you long enough to digest, sure fire way to loose weight
