Flying Scotsman

'Green Arrow' is the only surviving example of its class (a V2 courtesy of that nice Mr.Gresley). The problem with it is that its 3 cylinders are a monocoque construction instead of each being an individual. The excuse they use is that it is impossible to reproduce the 3cyl block which is needed as the original is, I believe, cracked. More likely it is too expensive for them! Cynical? Moi? Oh yes!!!!

 

Yup I used to do the same at Havant, rush onto the bridge when the Train was going under to get all covered in smoke , soot and who knows what else. Probably explains why we're how we are now!

 

I meant the ship, such an elegant piece of British heritage. I had the pleasure of crossing the Atlantic on her from Southampton to New York when I was a kid. My Dad got stationed in the States and he opted to go by sea rather than air. What a great decision. No first class it was all shut down then but as kids we managed to sneak our way inand do what kids do. Great memories and fun, came back on the Queen Elizabeth.

 

Money well spent! Would you rather spend it on some 'minority foreigners who need cuddles' project ??? Nae Chance.

A fantastic piece of British engineering. I was going to go to Carlisle to see it on its first run, but unfortunately they had problems and replaced it on the day, well sick. I am no spotter, but I am an engineer.

Slightly biased, must admit to driving a steam train from the age of 7 !!! By myself !!!! Admittedly it was only 4 foot long with a 5" gauge, but fully operational, great way to spend a Sunday with your dad who built them.


Not me !!! But as a kid I did help build the track there at !!!!

 

I had Flying Scotsman and Duchess of Sutherland Hornby sets when I was a nipper. Birmingham Science Museum has "City of Birmingham", a Sister engine to the Scotsman, on display. Along with some Meriden triumphs and various other old British rattlers

 

How about this one I was on/in in 1977....just joined the railway as a drivers mate, was Christmas eve ,3:18 in the morning. We passed a red signal & just rolled/buffered up to 2 electric locos coming across a junction in front of us.....only 1.1/4 million pound of damage....ooops! plenty of steam, smoke & flames that morning

 

It was red at one stage....oh yes, before the army put the flames out...fire brigade were on strike which was why it burnt so much I guess + the full diesel tank, that didn't help any either.

 

Oooohh .... clumsy!!!

Still, I guess it soon polished out!!

Believe it or not, it did...They actually rebuilt her as a 47/5 from 47163....The 2 electric loco`s that we hit were scrapped forever.
SORRY BIGLAD...Bikers forum from now on, but, fond memories of the heady days of the 1970`s even though they very nearly killed me!!!!

 

No worries mate,it was just meant to be the gentlest of nudges back to the Dark Side - even though I'm a big fan of the steam era myself.

 

So did I! Shall I start a thread about Spitfires or Tiger Tanks?
