P.S. Triumph got back to me about the factory oil.....just the same that goes in the engine for everyday use they said.

The sales man must have been talking through his bum.

Salesmen sell bikes, mechanics maintain them.

I always thought the info could be suspect.

Hi Notso.....old post I know.....I was told my 2020 T100 was factory filled with mono grade mineral oil...SAE30 by my dealer and to drain it at no more than 500miles its was to aid break in or running in as we in the UK call it.

I have for some time being trying to find out if that was true but cant.

How sure are you that Triumph did indeed but mineral oil in....and what year was you bike.

The reason I ask is than me and lot of other owners notice a cold start rattle on every cold start after that first oil change.....wondering if that mineral oil was thinker and masking something.

Love to hear you views on what oil was indeed in these new motors.

Triumph say 1st oil change at 1 year now....so something has changed????

    Nick in the UK.

I bought an end of line 2018 bike before the upgrades and at the time it was a 500 mile change. I only have the word of the dealer unfortunately. I doubt there is much difference between synthetic and mineral oil of the same grade up to that sort of milage, so my thoughts would be that synthetic would cost more for no benefit?

OK thank you for getting back to me Sir...yes I can understand that.

Its also well known that mineral oil was the type of oil of choice for the break in period in yeas gone by.....as maybe its wasn't as slippy...a none tech term....and allowed matting surfaces to bed it.

    We will never know.

Its just that my bike on 1st start after that first oil change in 2020......and still does to this day.....has a cold start tapping noise goes after a few mins.....that was not there before the oil change.

A quite common problem I have found out taking about it online after that first 500ml oil change.

SAE30 I was told....which far as I know is thicker cold than 10w/40 used after running in.....and from new on newer bikes.....with a 1st oil change not req till 1000mls.

The camchain tensioner has been talked about before on here. It's a mechanical/hydraulic hybrid using oil pressure, a spring and a ratchet. My 1st Street Scrambler did it for a few seconds virtually every cold start. My 2nd SS did it occasionally and my current 1200 rarely does it. It only ever lasts a few seconds, certainly not a few minutes as someone mentioned above. The balancer shafts can also rattle on cold starts if their drive gear adjustment is not optimised but that's better than having them too tight causing excessive whine and wear when hot.

Yeah I considered the balance shafts so checked then.....they were fine.....your correct they can rattle is loose or whine if tight.....yes tight is bad.....cause lots of wear.

Hello I drop the oil whilst warm as it offers better viscosity.
