Electricity is 100% efficient. That feat has only been achieved in a lab at .1 degree above zero Kelvin.

Everything from generation, transmission, storage and conversion to useful work all creates waste. Electric is not efficient - physics and poor engineering (not their fault as zero loss infrastructure hasn’t been invented yet) make it inefficient. inefficiency does not mean dirty (stop sniggering at the back of class!) just that you need more input for little output.

I am beginning to favour hydrogen as a fuel.

    Reasons?

    1) We don’t dig up rare earth metals and other resources and allow China to dominate the world. Ni hao ma? Get used to it.

    2) National grids and electrical generation globally and locally can’t cope with electric cars charged at home or in a public plug in charger - at the scale and tempo needed to replace fossil fuels.

    3) Hydrogen has a bad name because of the Hindenburg. FFS put a shit load of flammable gas in a bag near a match and whoof disaster. I hate top gear but they proved something about electric vehicles is that they too burn easily but also continue to burn, and burn. Toxic gases - heck yes.

    4) I’m bored now.

    5) Think about jobs. Hydrogen could still be delivered by tanker to H2 stations (like petrol stations but more pretentious) who could let you use their loos (important to me) after buying a coffee and pastry. In the world of electric we are going to have to grow mega bladders and pack our own coffee and buns. Edit: and pack a sleeping bag as the bloody things recharge - unless capacitive graphene (uninvented) technology can save the day.

Politicians sway to the loudest voices (usually woke) and ignore the majority.

Edit: the press have a job to generate income to keep their papers printing and report fact has become secondary - the editorial is what defines news. Fact is subjective. Remember that.

Stirring shit and creating discord is what makes them
money. There are laws to protect independent journalism. I agree wholeheartedly in that principle. Just show me where it happens…

All this makes me think of people who claim life started off world. A meteor strike carrying aliens dna. They singularly fail to explain where that life came from are totally missing the point of the exam question.

Edit: Whooo - have I had a bad day or what?!?

For all the classic fans. If you live near a canal or river somewhere you will find a station that still sell leaded petrol. Simple old thing the old barges and canal boats don't run to good on ethanol plus they get laid up regularly. I go to Platts of Marlow. Bit more expensive but good for the classics.

Has anyone noticed any effects of running E10? I've run a few tanks through the SS and the idle has become quite lumpy. I thought at first the pickup wasn't quite as crisp as it was but I may have imagined that. The tickover is definitely more erratic. Last time out, just prior to returning home, I refilled with SU E5 stuff so I'll run a couple of tanks off and see if the idle returns to "normal".

Impossible for me to say since l've used E10 virtually exclusively for many, many years. I will say this; I know of only one source for pure gas in all three grades. It's not near my house, but I did use close to a full tank of 93 octane (US) in the HD I own. I got surprisingly good MPG. I know in theory that E10 lowers MPG slightly, and this seemed to prove that. Keep in mind that was a single tank, so it's a very small sample size. In terms of performance, idle etc. I noticed no real difference.

Has the bike been sitting for a while? Carbs? Ethanol fuel doesn't store well, and the idle jets have really tiny holes. My old Tbird certainly wasn't very friendly after being stored over winter with a tank full of E5. Never again.

The bike is used 2-3 times/week, minimum, usually 50m+ runs. It gets used all year round so is unlikely to be idle more than a couple of weeks at a time if we have any really bad weather. It's approaching 9k miles so the first major service isn't too far away. If using SU E5 makes no difference I'll probably do the service early and fit new plugs, balance the throttle bodies etc......
