To be honest I would agree with your comments Tricky, I personally don't think the man himself would have wanted a such a thing as a state funeral or even a statue as is being proposed for him, he seemed a gentleman that never required anything for himself and did what he did for others,
However I do think his place on a bank note or even a postage stamp would be very acceptable, IMHO that is.
I will however admit he deserves whatever the nation see's as fitting for a true inspiration during difficult times, and for the money he raised for the NHS, God Bless Him.

Yes I watched the tribute on tv and I was humbled. It took me back to when our country was great and respected by the world. Wasn't he a rea character made from pure gold.

He was clearly an exceptional man, but this does seem a bit OTT. State funerals are very rare indeed.

There are many, many people who have served valiantly in the forces and, in many cases, given their lives for others, who may have a stronger claim than Captain Sir Tom.

It’s very easy to hype things on social media, and we need to respect and praise his achievements but at the same time keep them in context. He was a brave man and he raised money for a noble cause. I wish I could say the same about me. But that isn’t enough for a state funeral.

Yes I think like the peeps said here I don't think he would have wished it. And yes they were all hero's and to true many paid with their lives. But there for a while Tom made it like the whole stood together and said can I do something to help you. And I do love the idea of a note or coin and yes for Tom and all our service people who laid down their lives so we could be free.

I can imagine that a state funeral would be hijacked by a bunch of venal politicians, not fit to have laced his boots, to try to bask in the reflected respect and affection.

 

There are many that have give a lot of themselves supporting us through lockdown - NHS, police, military, retail, transport, the list goes on. Being exposed to the virus or in the case of NHS dealing with the emotional trauma of fighting for, and often losing patients who otherwise should be alive today but for the pandemic.

There are many examples of these hero’s having lost their own fights for survival after becoming infected - their own colleagues and friends doing their utmost to save them.

I'm quite certain there will long term mental health issues when this is all over.

I don’t think it’s just about Capt Sir Tom, but he was an exemplar and a powerful symbol of the selfless attitude of these people.

Your are right there. I watched a programme think it was part of the news. Those nurses with tears in their eyes. Even my own Darling Wife. She has now got most of her team affected by this virus and yet they struggle on. We owe so much. Thankyou Captain Tom and love you all our carers.
