Their overheads might have doubled but most of us haven’t had our income doubled. Therefore it is for some becoming a little too expensive to eat out. There are quite a few pensioners on here and their pension certainly hasn’t doubled.
I've just been out for a full English brekkie, bacon, egg, tomato, sausage, black pudding, toast, fried bread. Cup of tea, 5p change from £6, It was very nice.The place was full too with bikers and non bikers alike. Quick, friendly service and sitting at a proper table with proper cutlery. It can be done. I spoke to the proprietor, he has lean times in winter he said, but now the Spring is here he will be busy until late Autumn.
Seems to be a high proportion of Yorkshiremen griping on here.......pensions haven't doubled, but they went up 8.5% this week on top of a 10.1% rise last year. Minimum wage also went up this week, so expect your cake to hit even more dizzying heights. I manage quite well on my pension by the simple expedient of still working....and come on-how may posts have we seen about how good life is as a pensioner and how much dosh they're raking in from NS & I, among others. Years ago my wife told me that most bikers are just tightarses, and it's hard to gainsay that. I recently offered a quality shock at a keen price but the buyer still wanted another pony off it, so I declined. Take a packed lunch may be the best idea
I just don't get it with Maccy D's Joe. Last time I had one was because there was no choice (out voted by the kids and SWMBO in 'merica about 15 years ago) where I suffered a fillet of fish or what ever it's called. The kids used to bring them home in the early hours after clubbing, put them in the fridge, then reheat them later that day
Triple locked state pensioners are the lucky ones! I'd suggest its the going it alone private pensioners, who haven't reached the rip off state pension age yet, who should be sympathised with? I still feel it's a breach of contract, irrespective of any medical advances bull5hit, for people to pay into something only for them to be told 20, 30, 40, 50 years later, that the pay day has now moved. All wrong, just wrong! I was at a pension forum meeting in 2013 and I asked what appeared to be a straight up presenter, "what is stopping the payout date rising yet again in say ten years time?" He quite openly said " nothing is!" Sounded like a real incentive for saving for old age that did. Rant over.
2016 - I had a works declared 0% pay rise! How many years have pensioners, or minimum wage workers, had such reward? Maybe not rant over
I’m in that group Eldon, should have got my state pension in 18 months time. Now it’s 3 1/2 years before I get it!!! That’s unless of course they put the age up again before then.
Ex- sister in law, who I still speak and have contact with, retired at 57 fully expecting to fund herself x3 years to 60. The law changed and her calculations suddenly needed to cover EIGHT years to state pension not three. Did you see the bit about the guy responsible for putting the retirement age up to 67, he is now retiring at 61!!! Cheeky ba5tard but obviously justified his salary/pension by the cost savings he created for the government. He already owes me just short of £20k.
And whilst I'm on a rant..... oh god The government uses the office of national statistics (ONS) to support its agenda, sorry, policy decisions. The ONS clearly shows that men die 3 years or so ( can't remember exactly) before women. So, especially as we are now in an age of gender and everything else equality, why don't men retire three years earlier than women so as to make things fair? Was it Mark Twain...... there's lies, damned lies and statistics! So to get back on track, maybe we should do away with "OAP specials" at the chippy etc and rename it "working mans discount" to make it more appropriate to who' is actually paying for all these socialist policies and pensions/handouts/benefits etc. £5.20 @johne for something of your choosing, oh come on, give us a break!
Wow, outpouring very cathartic there @Eldon You're right though, my wife had the rug pulled out from under her too. I've effectively kept her for six years, her hands meant she needed to finish. Ironically now she finally has a pension it's like she's gone back to work. I still work too, l enjoy it, so finally we have something approaching decent disposable income.
I'm not naming places, good or bad. Its a generic thing I was referring to in the thread opener. It would seem there are still places who can provide good cafe food and good service and (presumably) make a living doing so. There are those that rip you off. That's my opinion of course and the whole point of a forum is to get all sides of the argument, so if you disagree that's your prerogative. I don't think its wrong to seek out good value in anything rather than just accept what's put in front of you. In my local town which I will name, Bridlington, the Aldi store is always packed with customers whereas the Tescos and Morrisons stores are much quieter than before the cheap supermarkets came on the scene. We all know in an effort to recoup lost sales, the bigger supermarkets all seem to offer price matching against the likes of Aldi. They wouldn't be doing that if they weren't feeling the heat of competition. Supermarket fuel isn't as cheap as it used to be, now they have cornered the market their prices have risen significantly, to the point where smaller privately owned filling stations are quite often cheaper now. That was never the case 5 or 10 years ago. I have a friend who owned a filling station in Selby 20 years ago. He told me he couldn't buy fuel wholesale for the price the supermarkets were retailing it for at that time.

Trackers is very good mate, well worth seeking out if you are over in Brid. In my opinion of course! Lol.
@Littleaid. I like the coffee and i can get a veggie burger. Like your lot i do sometimes take a couple of coffee's home to reheat. But i do also support the biking cafe's as like someone said if we don't support they will go. So maybe just having a moan just because you all listen to me. Joe
Breakfast and tea for £6.75 at the cafe in the London Gliding Club Clubhouse at Dunsterbubble. But just found out that they are closed and awaiting a new operator. They will reopen on the 19th of April.
That would be lovely without the beans. Disgusting things. Swap them for black pudding and it’s a cracking breakfast.
