I use a Garmin 660 and think it's a great tool. A group of us do lots of touring together and we all have the same model. One of our group has been able to master the notorious Garmin Base Camp planning software but as previously mentioned there are simpler software packages available to create routes.

Off for a 5 day trip round the Highlands on friday, so have hard wired my old Samsung SII to the bike today, use DRIVE app to navigate, even means you've always got a fully charged mobile on you when away for a few days.
Case and charging lead is form Ultimate Mobiles. Don't need a data connection, all maps in phone, especially useful when as far as Ullapool.

Using my Samsung Galaxy as a sat nav at the moment. Just got the ultimate addons waterproof case and ram mount. Using free Android app "Here" - you can download maps for anywhere in the world and use them offline so no charges incurred. Only tested it locally so far but seems to be OK.
