The company I work for built/ran powerstations (of all types apart from nuclear). If we could have had a workable tidal solution, we would have. It just wasn't viable from a cost point of view. Sure it will get there in time though.

Wind, on a large scale, is reliable. Sure, you wouldn't want to power 80% of your grid with it, but it if you can reduce the amount of fossil fuels you need to burn, that is better than nothing. There have been times recently (and more very recently I guess) when the UK had NO coal stations running at all. That doesn't seem like a bad thing to me.
