I test rode both in 2015 twice before choosing the GS, the second time back to back over the same roads on the same day. Both have had improvements made since then and this is what I thought at the time.

The Explorer was far heavier and carried its weight higher too. not a problem once on the go or if you're a bigish bloke but for a dwarf like me it was just too big and top heavy at low speed even just solo. 2 up with luggage I doubt I could have managed.The engine on the Tex was smoother and had more top end go and the gearbox was better too. The speedo was much easier to read-nice big digital numbers. The Tex felt more planted, probably due to it's extra weight. The Gen1 TEX was significantly cheaper new than the GS TE, especially in 2015 before the gen2 model came out the following year The TEX had around 12 extra HP but was around 35-40 kg heavier. Torque was very similar but the GS produced more lower down, but then wasn't as responsive up the top end as the TEX.

The GS has the telelever front suspension, not to everyone's liking but it doesn't dive so much under braking as normal front forks. it's lighter, more nimble, had better brakes and suspension and finding your way round the various menus was easier. The screen was better too on the GS and the engine braking was stronger too but the speedo is cr4p to read.

For me the GS was the better overall package, though more expensive

The Gen2 explorer now has semi active suspension amongst other improvements over the gen1 version I rode, but it's now much closer price wise to the GS.

Both have their advantages and neither is perfect imo, it's just a case of which individuals prefer and what they're going to use it for.

Thanks for that Ade,just thinking they would make great touring bikes,and also have a bit of fun if i went out on my own.i have sat on an explorer it seemed massive and looked a hell of a lot bigger than the GS..not sure which model of explorer it was though..maybe get one in 2/3 years

Picked up my brand new XRT yesterday Unfortunately I won't get to ride it for a while as off on family holiday. Something to look forward to upon my return.
