I've been checking out a few hotels and if you have a room on your own it will work out pretty expensive as Hotels up the west coast are around the £80-£100 a night...
i was thinking about staying at the Lochcarron hotel on the Tuesday night (thats where we stopped off for breakfast after leaving skye last year) they have 5 twin rooms and it's £100 a room that includes breakfast,so £50.00 each,
there is also a guest house along the road a bit they are £45.00 per person they have 3 twin rooms..is everyone ok with those sort of prices? i was thinking possibly 2 nights in hotels and the rest in Hostels The hostels we will be staying at will be around about £20-£25 a night..

The hostels were pretty good to be honest. Some of them are in really great old buildings. I particularly liked the one in Braemar and I thought the chips at the Hungry Highlander were the best I have tasted for many years (apart from my own home made ones that is). In contrast, I didn't think the hotel we had on the last night was as good as the bunkhouse at Corran. Though as bunkhouses go, that is top notch. I did have a newish en-suite twin room though.

I agree some of the hostels were much better than i thought they would be,we could stay in a hostel on Skye on the tuesday but then it would mean a longer day on the wednesday which i personally don't have a problem with but some folk might not be so keen..i'll have a look at my route and maybe jiggle things about!

    @Dougie D

I'll go with the flow mate. A couple of hotels won't break the bank. Though as Andy says, we had some pretty damn fine hostels - though the one on Skye was disappointing, but less so than another along the road a bit I stayed at last year.

There is a cracking hostel near portree on Skye but that would leave a much longer run up to Ullapool, like you say 2 hotels won't break the bank :)

    2019 Scottish Road Trip :)

I will be organizing another Scottish road trip this year, the dates will be Sunday the 26th of May (meeting up at Tyndrum) and leaving for home on Sunday the 2nd June, it is one day more than last year as I’m intending to spend 2 nights in Ullapool so folk can either do the Lochinver Loop or explore further north. The route will be similar to last years but with a few changes.
Accommodation will be mostly Hostels/Bunkhouses but I’m hoping to include a couple of hotels, detailed daily route cards will be provided again and I will email them several weeks before so you can study them and if required you can copy them out again in a way that suits you.
Once I have definite numbers then I can go about checking out accommodation and I will post up the daily route maps (detailed daily info on the route will be sent to you separately) Please copy and paste your name below if you would like to spend a week riding some fantastic roads!!

All the hostels were spot on and the ones Ive slept in on my own.
Saucy Marys ( my suggestion,) in Skye was the worst, a bit worn out and tired, its ok.
I dont mind a couple of hotels although to be honest I prefer the hostels cos they seem a bit less business like and cosier.
What did @Jockstew think of the place he stayed in Skye.
What you suggest sounds good Dougie.

Agree about Saucy Mary's, it was easily the worst. I reckon it only gets business because of its name, I wouldn't want to go there again. I was happy with all the others.

I'm easy. I'd prefer bunkhouses/hostels, but will go with the flow.

I've provisionally booked the Hostel in Tyndrum a 6 bed, and two 4 bed dorms and a twin dorm for Nikki, we pay them when we arrive at the Bunkhouse

It was clean, it was just, old, tatty, and smelt like a Hong Kong kitchen.
