I had the R because I like the front Showa and Brembo calipers, and I like the grey

But I think you could get a bit of a deal on a standard 1200. My dealer sold a black one for £10k - the saving against the R would buy you some nice tasty bits. You can buy Ohlins shocks, which would probably be better than the standard ones and a new cartridge kit up front. Then it makes it slightly different than any standard bike.

Some Arrow cans, even a full system would make it tasty.

Difficult decision I agree......good luck. Whatever you decide you won't be disappointed, it's a brilliant bike.

Wotcha, although I've just about got used to it, I still find the ride harsh(yes, I know it's a racer at heart), and I found the front adjustment made little difference- 3 adjusters front and back .I love it though, beautiful.

I did the back-to-back test ride.

Both great bikes, very little difference in the ride, the most obvious being the way the R turns in at low speeds. The slightest body lean produces a satisfying turn. This difference disappears over about 30mph.

Before the ride I adjusted the damping on the rear to soft, being a lightweight and having old bones. It still felt a tiny bit firmer than the stock Thrux but not by much. The brakes work fine on both, the R requires slightly less effort.

I did notice that the R was a bit jiggly at 70 on the motorway, I found that surprising. By then I had been soaked for about an hour and was getting a bit tired.

Both bikes look fantastic, I prefer the green and I'm not at all keen on the brushed exhaust on the R, prefer shiny chrome, but the I admit the red R looks lovely. The yellow suspension looks cool too. But really, classic works for me.

I got a tempting price on an R for April delivery but right now I'm leaning towards a green non R.

Quote of the day "the only thing wrong with the stock Thruxton is that there's an R model"

Apparently Triumph have sold 9 Rs for every stock Thrux. Is that true I wonder?

Not often you see anything as nice as that on the back of a camper van.
Looks like you've got life sorted, good on yer!

Oop! Sorry I thought the Thruxton was on a rear carrier, not bothered much about the sticker. lol

When I was at the dealers not long after the release of the Thruxton, they had a long line of Thruxton R's waiting to go out, about 8 or 9, and just one std model....

Ah, you won ! congrats, long may you prosper.
One could have a 12 in every colour, they seem to look so different.

I reckon you made the right decision there mate.

    Beautiful.

Ive got one downstairs in the garage and I never tire of looking at it.

Most beautiful bike currently on the market in my opinion.

    Beautiful.

It's a 66 plate reg in November and had under 200 miles before I rode it home yesterday. My hands got pretty cold on the 3 hour ride and when I got home I realised it was fitted with heated grips... doh

    Hi ffg,

    .....lovely bike, enjoy....

.....you said 'Decision made'......my friend, your decisions have only just started!.....the list of nice to haves is far too long and tempting!!!.....

...I see the hand-over talk-through by the 'sales johnny' was comprehensive then!........the factory heated grips are brilliant.....

....was this an ex-demo bike?.....if yes, please come on over to the 'General Triumph Discussion' thread and comment on the thread 'should I buy an ex-demo bike'......

Well done on getting your bike,

    Cheers,

It's not a demo bike, I guess it didn't suit the original owner, who chopped it in for something else apparently.

I don't think it had been long at the dealership, I did ask if it had any extras. I got the dual seat and passenger pegs, thinking about a tail tidy. And maybe sports exhaust. Damn, I can see were this is going.

    ......

....my Thruxton was similar, one private owner, 540 miles on the clock and he'd already spent over 600 quid in extras on it!....
.....welcome to the mad house......us Thruxton boys are keeping the economy going!..........

    Cheers,

Tail tidy and V & H pipes are a must for any self respecting owner :)

.....all this 'tail tidy' malarkey must be an age thing......

....when I was young, without fail, every bike got the hacksaw treatment......where mudguards were reduced, excess brackets were cut off, every bolt was shorten to the absolute minimum, indeed no effort was spared in minimising anything and everything to make it look 'sexier' and lighter.

Now, with over 60 years on my clock, every new bike gets mudguard extenders and a hugger fitted.....and when I bought my Thruxton 12 I got the dealer to take off the tail tidy and put it all back to standard!.....best of it was the dealer gave me all the extras back and I sold them all on EBay so that reduced the purchase price even further by a few hundred.....I seem to have a lot more common sense now rather than dubious fashion sense.....

......Its just a good job we are all different since if we all liked the same stuff the world would be a very boring place!.......

    Cheers,

    dickydido
