Gear oil convert here. It's not so much the EP bit but the 80/90 bit, roughly translated as thick and chewy. Once its soaked in, it stays in....
If there's one benifit of being older it's the fact that its cheap. I'm still using kit that's 25 years old, and insurance......£150.

Chainsaw bar oil is, i believe, biodegradable and is not waterproof, so would wash off just easily, requiring frequent application. We use a lot...

Yet my mates 79 guzzi did, the back rises when you pull away and it pulls easier into bends one way than the other. He described it as 'quirky'....
