Are winter riders doing it for pleasure or just plane crazy taking on all them Extra risks, ice, snow, freezing rain, cold, dark, plus idiots on the road, and potholes. Is it too much of a risk and should insurance be less for those who don't do it
I ride all year round except when I can't get down the road for snowdrifts, no car, no shops or pub in the village so unless I ride I stay home. MCN 5000 ? I did 18,000 between MOT's march 17 to march 18 including Italy via Albania and Sweden / Norway FIM events, yes I am retired and widowed and poor, you gotta do what you gotta do as someone said?
I ride every working day throughout the year. Only missed one day this year when the snow was too deep. Just got to have the right gear and ride to the conditions. And no, insurance should not be cheaper for summer-only riders.
Myself and the wife go out in winter on the bike . As long as you ride too the conditions you should be OK . And yes we are both Crazy Thinking about up grading to this for the winter if only it came in BLACK Tucker
When I was 17 and needed my suzuki 100 to get to work in all weather's and yes I had no accidents due to bad weather as I did ride more carefully but as I am now 61 and have a nice warm car I can't see the point in freezing my bollox off just for the hell of it not saying that a nice sunny winters day isn't appealing so I agree with all comments and maybe I won't keep it under wraps all winter
Yes again I ride all year round. Don't drive a car and still love the bikes. But winter I get the honda out. But it bloody cold sometimes. Ride Safe Joe
Yep I ride all year round, my better bikes get put away in the winter and out comes the old trusty Honda. The last time I stepped off wasn’t in the winter but 2years ago in the height of summer
Ride all year by choice (unless there is actually snow on the ground). Use the Tiger and keep the Bonnie for dry days. All good experience and part of growing up and being British!
The Norwegian Motor Cycle Union has held the annual Krystall Rally since 1970. In the mountains, to guarantee proper winter conditions.
I too ride all the year round because its what I enjoy, but you adapt your riding to the conditions on the day. As for Insurance reductions, those who ride in all weathers should be the ones getting reductions as experience of riding in all conditions keeps you on your toes and your skills up to date. Those who only ride in the summer and on dry days should be the ones paying more for their insurance as a result of their lower experience levels and intermittent riding times would suggest.
Like many before I ride all year round. If the bike gets wet or dirty, just clean it. There is no doubt that riding in all conditions hones you riding skill levels......... and to be honest you cannot improve if you don’t get the experience! Wessa
Out and about today on the Tiger. When I left home at 08:10 there was frost on the cars and the temp was 3*c, put a splash of petrol in the tank and set of to meet my riding buddy. By the time we got to the breakfast stop 27 miles from home, Lynn’s Raven Cafe south of Whitchurch, the temp had risen to 3.5*c. Great ride and with the appropriate clothing on I was nice and toasty. So you girls who only ride if the temp is above 15*c and rain isn’t forecast for 3days stay at home and then you’ll not get in my way .
Had a lot of experience riding in most conditions all year round, but you have to be sensible about it! A winter hack (Honda 250 or a CB 500) is a good idea if you can afford it, you know, extra insurance, good quality tyres etc. My last machine (F800st) was used year round for 4 years but it suffered from dreaded salt attacks every winter, after 74.000 miles it was knackered. Ride to the conditions you're faced with and you should be good to go!
I rode for the Blood Runners for 18 months & 2 winters. They would ask for 4 wheels if the temp was <3*C. I now find that as I slip into weakening faculties; technology provides supporting help: abs, tc, heated stuff etc. I ride whenever I like
