    Hi guys,

Not sure the best place for this as its strictly not Triumph related (shock, horror!!) but I am protecting my New 765 with a winter hack.

I've found an option online for a 2002 Fazer for £800 in very good condition with 60k on the clock (from the photos) and according to the seller everything works as it should. The site I've purchased from has done the HPI checks and it has MOT history. They have no service history but he is putting it through a new MOT and applied for the V5 (not sure why they didn't have this in the first place..mmm). Has an exhaust replacement which seemed to be an issue on that model (rotting).

It's a few hours to go and test this but I'm not that technically minded but sure I could pick up anything obvious.

For £800 I suppose it's not a major gamble but what is everyones thoughts on this purchase? Does the MOT give good piece of mind to the mechanical condition on the bike?

    Thanks in advance.

No I know from experience that the mot tells you very little. Better to check it over carefully or better still get someone to go with you who knows a bit. 2 eyes are better than one here. That is the problem with buying on ebay etc
I can confirm that the exhaust on the fazer is very prone to rotting, my mate used to despatch on one and he got through 2 systems on his. Apart from that it was a great bike

Great idea, a few on here have bikes with huge millages, so use this and keep the miles off your 765.
Fazer are a bike you here nothing but good about.
An MOT is a piece of paper.
    Whats your service budget?
    Buy a manuel.
Check the bearings, the brake pads, the chain and socket, listen for cam chain rattling, check adjustment on cables, tyre pressures, fork seals, rear shock, ( is the plunger clean does it move, whats the settings,).
Treat the bike like a mystery object, and check everything, Assume its be adjusted by idiots and neglected by fools.
Use this thread to keep us informed and ask questions, and photos.

Thanks for all the responses guys. Guess my MOT theory has gone out the window haha

No purchase yet still to put a deposit down. Might wait then until someone can come with me who can do more then wash a bike (badly).

Any members near Lincoln or someone near the area I could bribe with petrol money and alcohol to come and inspect with me?

Thanks I'm quite keen on a Fazer but taking that on board I'll think I'll withdraw my interest. My commute will be 400 miles a week so putting more major miles on it could be step too far without knowing the service history.

Fazer seem to start around £1300+ sadly just above my cash budget

Have a look around http://foc-u.co.uk/index.php to get some more info on fazers
I’m a member there as I’ve got a 98 Fazer 600 and there’s bikes with 100k+ miles that are still going strong

I only paid £900 for mine about 4 years ago, it needed a bit of tlc but has been solid and pretty trouble free.
I’d certainly recommend one as a cheap hack but only if you’ve got a bit of mechanical aptitude to keep it up to scratch, though that would also apply to pretty much any cheap hack. :p

I think freck has made a valid point about needing a bit of mechanical aptitude applying to pretty much any cheap hack.
Especially if you intend on doing 400 miles a week.

Luckily I've got a couple of people who can help with some maintenance for me, although the experts will be taking care of the 765!

Great to see the community can potentially help with a viewing, fantastic forum.

My thoughts on the price but the silence has been deafening since I made the offer. We were talking over email, which everyone seems to prefer these days! No one likes to talk on the phone anymore (especially my mates or maybe it's just to me haha).

I digress but thanks for the tips and your offer to view, the search continues and I'll get some pics of the new bad boy (765R) up later.

    @Dozers Dad £1200 but I'll make a counter offer.

They say it's been stored in the dark of the garage, no cracks, splits or wear and has a new MOT.

Update: £1150 been offered it at but the piggy bank has been hammered after the Striple  Will have a think as like you say will need to budget some new tyres

Thanks. I think this scared me originally as I would not have a scooby how to fix.

What would you suggest as an offer?

Edit: Offered £550 on the table with a big cigar in my mouth haha

Been offered at £700 if I choose to accept. What's your thoughts on the repair situation.

Are these things a mechanic would need to do immediately or for next. MOT etc

Thanks again for the help, really appreciate it

Good plan, cheers. Import as well so don't know how this affects the records as well it was a previous write off abroad?
