After deleting the air injection and O2 sensors, installing a hi flow air cleaner lid and remapping with a TPP creation I'm struggling to get the thing to idle - and it pops like mad on deceleration. Mike at TPP (who has been a fabulous support) feels sure it has a vacuum leak. I've sprayed all around the vacuum hoses and manifolds with starter fluid but the idle didn't change one bit. Also, the idle thumb screw under the left body doesn't make any difference whichever way I turn it.
I'm at a loss what to try next, so any help would be appreciated.

I'd check out the non-functioning idle screw first and find out why it doesn't?
    Did you leave something disconnected?

Pretty sure I didn't leave anything disconnected, but I'm getting older, not wiser it seems. The symptoms seem to point to an air leak but I can't find any.
I read somewhere that someone was having very similar symptoms. Turned out to be his coils starting to give out. But his was a carby'd 2005 America and Mike from TPP says the EFI coils don't give much trouble. But they were'nt all that expensive so I've ordered a pair in. It will at least eliminate one possibilty.

I look after a few bikes for friends and one has an old zzr 600.
He had carb faults and flatspots and it just wouldn't run right. Being a 4 cylinder, and using the old "how hot is the hand on the header pipe" technology  I suggested a coil change.
On thoser there is x2 coils feeding x2 cylinders each so a coil going down is quite significant.
He test rode it when I'd finished and said it's never run so well out of all the time he's had it.

He initially thought it was a reg/rec issue and so carried a spare reg/rec in his pocket in case it failed :joy:

I remember when I was doing my apprenticeship our tech teacher would say 90% of carby problems are in the electrics.

I got a new pair of coils and fitted them. There has been a good improvement but not a 100% fix.
The popping has reduced greatly, but still there - no where near as mad as it was before.
There is still has a tiny bit of hesitation when throttling on around corners, but it is acceptable.
The only remaining problem is the idle speed. It's idling so low it stalls out. It runs adequately on the first notch on the "choke" although just a little too fast for my liking. I'll be removing the throttle bodies next to investigate why I can't balance them and why the idle thumbwheel doesn't work. While I'm at it I'm going to turn up something with a hex body to replace that stupid little balance adjustment screw.

Sounds like you need to remap the bike. Sounds like to much fuel to me.

Just a footnote: Due to work commitments I haven’t been able to get much work done on the bike. I finally got around to pulling the throttle body off it. I couldn’t find anything wrong with it so I cleaned them thoroughly, blew them out and fitted them back on. There must have been a blockage or something lurking in there because the bike is perfect now! Smooth, clean running, no popping or flat spot. I wish I could have found something obvious just so I could put a reason to it, but I’m grateful that the problem has been solved.

Could be the remap, I'd tune it back to standard and see if it goes away...
