Would like to increase the tyre sizes on my Hinckley 790 Bonnie with wire rims.......

    Has anyone done this?
I have seen some on the mag rims have gone down this route but just wondered if anyone with chrome wires has done it.

Current Front is 100x90x19 with the Rear being 130x80x17.
I am not too fussed about going bigger on the front but certainly would like to go bigger outback.

Let me know your thought peeps.

Not having done it myself I thought I would leave it to others to reply but you are probably feeling ignored!

I have done it with other bikes so my first question is WHY? There is no performance benefit to be had but you will subtly change the handling characteristics and maybe increase your rolling resistance too. You may find turn in needs a tad more effort but profiles vary between manufacturers and tyres so it is another variable. The main reason to do it is because you prefer a chunkier look. Just recognise it is aesthetic and not an 'upgrade' in any meaningful performance sense.......unless you have spectacular engine mods to feed.

Just remember clearance issues and the slight changes in circumference will minimally impact speedo and gearing .....but again, probably not enough to notice.

I leave it to others to argue for particular brands and sizes.

    Thanks Callumity.

Just fancied a chunky back end.
I only ride on sunny days and holidays so not planning much wet weather work.

Have chopped the mudguards down etc I am about to upgrade the exhaust, air box, jetting and fancied a more aesthetic back end.

If the general consensus is leave alone I will.

Jones not sure what our political system is going to do now....

", just because you have a 50% larger contact patch, you will not suddenly get 50% more grip from your tyre. If you imagine trying to push a house brick across a table, you will need the same amount of force to move it whether it is placed on its widest or narrowest side. That is because the weight of the brick remains the same, and the amount of friction remains the same too, it is just spread over a larger or smaller surface area depending on which side the brick is in contact with the table. Grip works in very much the same way, regardless of the size of the contact patch."

I wouldn't change tyre sizes. I'd stick to manufacturers specified sizes. They are what they are for a reason.
