    Hey all,

Cleaning and checking my bike over this evening only to find some kind of screw/stud protruding from my rear tyre. I have removed it and it appears to have gone in diagonally to one of tyre thickest parts of tread on a fairly fresh tyre. As such the tube doesn't appear burst and the tyre seems to be holding air, my question is: is it safe to ride with this gouge in my tread or am I asking for trouble? I have a 160mile round trip on Friday so really need the bike to be safe and reliable. Pics of the offending object and subsequent damage below.

Ps. bike is a spoked wheel Bonnie if that makes any difference

Had a look and as far as I can tell it went in at an acute enough angle that it isn't deeper than the tread. Will pop in a dealers when I have a chance though. Thanks guys

Well this week can do one, f**k off come back then f**k off again! Looks like I'll need a new tyre this time judging by how close that is to the side wall. Beginning to think my rear wheel is magnetic.

Jeez that is unlucky ..... Still at least you will have the piece of mind that you have got 100% good rubber underneath you

Wow, not your lucky day is it. That one must have punctured the tube

I would say that's definitely a new tyre now and it might be wise to change the inner tube at the same time.

I cant help but think you were lucky in one respect.
At least you didn't replace the tyre on the first instance, only for this second piece of crap to go through the wall of your new tyre!

The second one may have come from the car park at work, there is some building work going on adjacent so it is conceivable that screws are lying around. The first is apparently the tip of a high heel shoe!!! God knows how that got on the road but I going to assume I have picked up these offending items at different stages of my commute.

No worries, I appreciate the input. I avoid the verges, curbs etc. Relatively new to motorcycling but years of cycling has me pretty para about avoiding debris. Even checked my tyre pressure after the first time to make sure it didn't have a role to play in all this but it seems fine. Just a bad week I suppose :(

Now to order a new tyre and tube. That one seems to still be holding air somehow...I think, so I should be able to hobble it the mile or so to nearest place that can fit a new tyre for me.

Took a new tyre and got it fitted today. Much to the surprise and confusion of all present, that screw had gone diagonally through the tread but not broken through to the tube! Had a debate about whether that made me lucky or if I was unlucky since I still had to get a new tyre.
