While I'm reasonably confident mechanically, electrics and ECU's are a mystery to me.
Does anyone within 50 miles of Cambridge fancy having a play with an aging speed four remap? Happy to pay you for your time.
    It has an OBD2 plug

It runs well under load but is awful in town, looks and smells like it's running quite rich.

    Thanks, Ben

The Speed 4 engines are really reliable, it is an updated engine that was in the TT600 and Daytona 600, you don't mention if it has the original exhaust on, or an aftermarket end can, if an aftermarket can has been fitted it does affect the low speed running, historically the early TT600 machine shad the same issue, this was cured with a balance pipe in the exhaust header pipes, the Speed 4 has this mod, your bike runs the Sagem fuel injection system, this is renowned for being an issue at low speed, that's why the Daytona 600 ran a Keihin system, the set up and balancing of the throttle bodies can make it run ok but it is never going to be as smooth you are never going to get it as smooth as say the latest Street Triples. Personally I only use the Dealer Tool, it offers simplicity and covers all you need, balancing the throttle bodies is a doddle with this unit, as is many other functions, unfortunately I live in North Lancashire otherwise I would have been happy to take a look for you at zero cost. I suspect it may well be a throttle body balance issue, also the Speed 4 runs poor at low revs if the air filter is worn, the airbox gets a lot of debris in via those front air intakes and this does clog up the filter pretty quick, the same is true for the Street 765s. The Dealer Tool costs roughly £60 and may be worth considering as you may well find it a lot easier to navigate, also with this it will not override the ECU so you will not have to worry about having to re configure the ECU given what you say regarding your technical knowledge, also there is no dark art to a wiring system or the ECU, just knowledge gained, and we all started somewhere. Keep the forum posted and hope all goes well.

Thanks for the very informative reply, gutted you are so far :)
It has got a Max torque road legal can on, certainly a bit noisier than standard. And as it always smelt so rich I was worried the air filter was blocked and so fitted a pipercross.
Neither mod changed how she rode much but it does sound delicious over 6000rpm now.
I haven't got much to compare it to, I stopped riding 17 + years ago and my last bikes were 80's fzr600 and a 91' zxr750.
It just feels a touch flat until revving hard and I've seen so many people say their bikes were transformed with a gentle mapping. She does continue to accelerate quite nicely at higher speed, 89-115mph
I also stupidly road tested a brand new xsr900 and a Norton 961 (Judas) so the speed four is now feeling particularly un-torquey.
I still love riding her, makes me smile even when commuting if given the chance to open up.
    Ben
