Got a problem with my trophy, now here goes

was lumpy bottom from cold and hot, found a split in carb suction hose (I thought it was a breather, but just found its not) repaired that and took it round block, all ok.

So of to France with the lads. Once bike had warmed up, below 4000 rpm, its got no power, runs lumpy, will rev itself up to 3500 on tick over or run so low it dies (always starts back up though) above 4500 rpm, not a problem.
Did pull the positive of each coil and on no 3 made no difference to the running, checked coil, then ht lead then spark plug, and it sparked fine.
Now if its electrical it shouldn't run faster, but the other symptoms would fit, nothing is obstructing and it can rev its self up while on tick over, and I would have thought that would be an air leak.
Its an extremely well looked after 1999 model.

    From the mud people
Sound like its searching for fuel.Check for any blocks/kinks in pipes, and splits (again) and make sure its all sealed up on the carbs and airbox. If i remember(but i might be wrong) does the fuel tap have a small mesh filter in, if so check and clean. I seem to be coming across a lot of bikes, mostly carbed, that seem to be having a running problems?? same with a bandit i have, and im wondering if they have added something to the fuel AGAIN, as most cars and bike now are injection and iv not heard anything with them.

    Just a thought:cool:

I keep coming to carbs myself but I have had them vapour blasted around 2 1/2 months ago, also checked the diaphragms and all look fine. Just in case I left it on prime for 20 mins while running to eliminate the need for the suction side, and tried it on the res just in case. Thing is we did over 700 miles and she got no better or no worse. But think I'm gonna give the carbs + air side a full strip. Just been reading about some with the crank case sensor, I take it that's a fancy name for a pulsa coil?? if so does any of you know what the readings should be??

usually if it is the crank sensor the symptoms are the bike cutting completely out. Then after a few mins when the sensor cools a little, the bike fires ok. My sprint used to be really lumpy like yours tho it didnt rev as high as yours on tickover but it did drop very low and stall a lot. I had all the pipes replaced and new coils/leads fitted and it has been fine since. Oh I had an air filter too as my old one appeared to have a birds or sommats nest inside it.

it was always worse during a run, seemed much better when the lump was colder. I used to have to turn the tickover up a bit so it wouldnt stall, still have mine set at about 1200 revs now coz to me its too slow at 8-900. I also had issues with my old throttle cable which seemed too short, the revs changed when you turned the bars, new cable and rerouting cured that.

have you checked for air leak on carb rubbers?? have you run fuel system cleaner through,if it is only on lower revs it sounds like maybe blocked pilot jets but I am no expert. having said that you did say you had found a leccy problem on no 3 cylinder, you will obviously have to fix this anyway

I've been lazy, just booked it in the bikeshop, to busy at the mo to spend some quality time sorting it.

    Ok where to start.

Firstly these bikes need to be maintained properly as they are getting a bit old.

Pilot jets need to be checked and carbs most probably need a good clean out.

Also make sure your coils are working alright as they are known to go wrong.

Would also be worthwhile getting the valve clearances checked as the exhaust valves close up after time.

    Cheers
