    Hi all
I have a big prob and don't know where to start :-/
Basically I had a lot of work done mainly cam chain glide and new cams
All together was about £300 - £400 at the garage
So I was happy when I finally got on it and was rideing for about an hour maybe more
I'm not very experienced but for what I thought a 750cc bike should give out
It just seemed it was holding back then all of a sudden I was revving and it wasn't giveing me anything
Like there's a rev limiter is how I can describe it then stoped and wouldn't start I sat at side of road till it cooled
And it fired but with a loud knocking and within 5 - 10 min revs limit and cuts out again
Like something ceased when warm but when cold it turns over nice and fires but the knock there till warm then cuts
I took it back to garage and he didn't wanna touch it as he said it's the bottom end and not worth it
    But I'm not sure
Any help please ?? And thank you so much for reading :)

First question is what was the bike like before you had the work done and were you using the bike before the work was done, I also take it that this was not a Triumph dealer that did the work?
I have a friend that has a Daytona 750 (same engine as yours and he had fueling issues when the engine got hot) not sure if that may be an issue here.
Where is the knocking coming from in the engine as I would be concerned that the garage that has done the work may have messed something up if it was not doing it before.

It just sounds weird as these engines are almost bulletproof and for the garage to do the work take your money and then wash their hands of it sounds a bit wrong.

    Cheers

I would get a second opinion from a Triumph dealer as I would be quite suspicious of the guy not wanting to look at it after so recently working on it. Basic stuff I know but have you checked the engine oil level? Bad knocking is never a good thing and it sound like the mechanic is taking about the big end bearings which is an expensive repair if your paying someone.

I would drop the engine oil:
    1) To measure the volume of oil (is there enough)
    2) To check to see if any metallic bits come out with the oil, big fragments are bad news.

    Hi Richard
Apparently the guy dropped the oil and found small metel bits
This is why he didn't wanna touch it as it would mean splitting the engine to get to big end
And that would be pricey just to see what it is as I'd already spent so much on the work already
What kinda price would a triumph dealer want? Always scares me when ya talk official dealer lol
Cos tbh I could do with a dealer saying it's to do with the work that's been done and stick this on paper then I have proof
    The guy messed up
I'm near ripley Derbyshire do you know anyone local by any chance?
    Cheers

    Hi Steve
I sent you a reply yesterday but it's not here so not sure it it got to you lol
Basically no I used another bike before as this one had a rattle from cam chain also the tyres were part worn ex track ones so felt like it was on rails :-/ so this garage did me the cam tentioner then found the guide was badly damaged this was all awhile ago as I ran out of funds and the bike sat in my garage since but still turns freely and seems ok till it fires and on tick over knocks like the pistons trying to come through :-/
The knocking seemed bottom end at first now it sounds more top and a lot louder
You say the Daytona engine would fit is there any other that would drop in? As the trident is quite hard to find cheap
Tbh just wanna get it back on road and sell to a liveing owner realy
    Thanx for the reply

Hi as far as dealer prices are concerned I think Pidcocks Triumph Nottingham are about £67/ Hour  You may have trouble proving the guy messed up without stripping the whole engine and it was running fine when you picked it up I am guessing? If you do want to save the engine I would not run it any more...... a con-rod coming through the side of the engine will render it scrap. You could go on a steep learning course with a haynes manual and strip it yourself, or perhaps look out at breakers and e-bay for a replacement engine. Sorry either way its more expense.

Ouch yeah I think striping the engine sounds cheaper lol I do have a manual and my dads on hand as the bike is at his
It's just haveing the time as I work 12 hour days
As for the engine I hear the Daytonas engine would drop into the trident
Do you know if any other engine could be dropped in??
Thanx for the info and advice realy appreciated
    Davy :)

What sort of condition is the rest of the bike in as I will be looking for another Trident to turn into a Cafe racer once I finish the CB 750 off.

If you are looking for bits or a replacement engine have a look at this post as these are the best guys to deal with when looking for early Hinckley parts

    http://thetriumphforum.co.uk/forum/f22/parts-finder-used-parts-1540/

Have a look on E Bay both 750 and 900 engines will fit straight in (they were all modular build and all are pretty much had the same frame)

Here is one that may be worth looking at

Before you sell the bike it might be worth having a look at the alternator as sometimes the spline on these came come loose and it sounds like the bottom end has gone.

It is a fairly easy fix if it is that but before you throw a possible good engine away it might be worth having a look at that.

Also what part of the UK are you in as I might be able to help with someone to look at it for you.

There are so many of these tridents getting sold for parts now there is going to be very few left and I think they are a great bike, I have a 97 750 that has only done 8000 miles.

    Cheers
