My affair with this perky, if slightly temperamental, beauty is over.... I've sold my Speed 400.

Those with a good one, or who are perhaps more tolerant than me, may wonder why I would do such a terrible thing, but some annoying glitches and the on/off single-cylinder performance characteristics were enough for me to realise this was not going to be a long term relationship!

I don't know what my next date will be but, for now, ride safe, see you around.

That's a shame, I hope you get yourself sorted with a new two wheeled acquaintance soon.

Sorry that you have had problems with yours not including your accident and difficulty getting the bike repaired. If I had been in your position I would probably do exactly the same. You have mentioned that you are looking at the Honda CL500, that seems to be an excellent choice and it has been on my radar, however the weight, or lack of it, of the Speed 400 swayed me.

Fortunately I have not had any of the reported problems with my Speed 400 and whilst I have only covered 1,000 miles I am hugely impressed with it. The one gripe I do have is the lack of accessories and spares, particularly heated grips. Hopefully I will not need any replacement parts in the near future.

I hope you get some new wheels soon, there seems to be an increase in the number of new bikes coming onto the market in the 400 - 500 cc range, many of them Chinese and whilst they seem to be good value for money as a new bike I and yet to be convinced on either the long term life or the potential trade in value, I worry that they will depreciate like the proverbial stone.

Happy hunting - let us know what you finally decide on.

Had a look at the CL500 yesterday, but it didn't do a lot for me and looked like a slightly cheapened stripped down 500X! Yes just as heavy and probably not for me.

No Chinese or Indian built bikes for me, for obvious reasons?!

Latest thoughts are heading towards Kawasaki Z400 or its update Z500 but I need to see one, I hate the thought of looking like a big bloke on a small bike!!

A single cylinder is quite a different riding experience especially if you're used to a multi cylinder.
The weight issue crops up a lot these days, a small bike is often only in cc's and output but not in mass.
When I was looking at greenlane/dual sport I gave myself a limit of 150 kgs, that in itself severely limited the market taking such beauties as an Aprillia 660 Tuareg out of the possibilities.

A test ride will soon whittle things down for you so take your time and choose wisely ;)

It surprised me how heavy the Triumph Classics are, given that they're quite basic machines. Of course they never pretend or claim to be SOTA machines and a steel cradle frame and compulsory "extras" like ABS and emission compliant exhausts/CAT's obviously don't help the weight issue.
My enduro bike is a single, quite a big one at 570cc and is a blast to ride but a very different power delivery and experience, even compared to the Triumph twin. It's also some 110kg lighter too which helps!:grinning:

You don’t have to move on just because you don’t have a Triumph. Stay and continue to enjoy the forum.

@ajc400 Sorry to hear you have parted company with your 400. But understandable. I to am questioning if i need to keep my 400 as I am not using it very much. Yes it feels underpowered.

"Speed 400" A bit of a misnomer then?

The "Speed" bit is just a styling exercise, as in "Scrambler".

The performance was OK for my sort of riding, but the little niggles, especially the cutting out thing, just stuck in my mind. It also made a bit of sense to make the break after my little bump and start afresh...... ;)

If weight is an issue, it was for me on my last purchase, have you looked at the Street Triple. Only 19 kg heavier than the Speed 400 and under 190 kg. A big difference in cost of course.
