Hi all, has anyone removed the petrol tank? I am a bit concerned about how the petrol pipe is connected underneath and how to un-couple it. I presume it will have have some 'fancy' modern coupling and i dont want to snap anything finding out.......you know what i mean.

Thanks Andy thats great. Well Mick, nothing too sexy a reason really. I just like to have a look under there and see whats going on but i didnt want to knacker anything finding out the hard way! I like to service my own cars & bikes and i feel i bond better with them that way. Knowing how to whip the tank off is just one of those things.......true story time....Many years ago i was coming back from Wales after visiting parents for the weekend. Its a 500 mile round trip. it was a Sunday, M1 motorway going North coming home, about 7 pm, side ways rain, dark. I was piss wet through & cold with about 120 miles to go. Stopped at motorway services to fill up. On my blue Honda Hornet (remember those?). Filled up and set off, out into fast lane again, 80mph head down bum up. Got about a mile or so and it died on me? WTF? Pushed it on the hard shoulder to the emergency phone (pre mobiles dont forget). Absolutely Knackered. Rang for help. Tow truck came & said he would take me off the motorway to the next services but no further. So as i sat there in the dark feeling like could this get any worse i pondered over why she had died? Didnt make sense? Newish bike, normally mega reliable.....no I didnt, did I? Yep, i had only gone and filled up with diesel! What a dick. So i borrowed some spanners/ pliers off a lorry driver and whipped the tank off, poured the diesel onto some grass and then put it back on and filled up with petrol. She did fire up, smoked like a goodun for a few seconds but i was back in the game. Got home about 1am if i remember. Hence i like to know how they go together!!

Great story jboy. I hope you don't get any environmental friendly hippy types coming after you for contaminating the grass. lol
It still amazes me that no 'Poke Yoke' system has been put in place to stop Diesel and Petrol mix ups, the different diameter nozzle is not good enough.
I too like to know how everything is assembled and do all my own maintenance, the frustrating thing for me now are the electronics because I don't understand them and I am not that interested in learning, I like mechanical things.

Hi, took the tank off today. Went fine BUT getting that damn petrol pipe clip/union thingy off was a right faff. I did manage it but it took ages. I had to use some pliers but was worried about snapping something because its hard to feel whats going on. Is there a proper tool that you can buy, does anyone know? Ta jon

Delboy warns not to take the tank off unless absolutely necessary because of that very issue and the fact it is very difficult to re-seal.
Andyc1 seems to have managed okay though.
