As I've broken my wrist and bored I've been tinkering with my new ST. Sods law being as it is, I only passed my bike test a week before breaking my first ever bones in 55 years, arse, tits, fark.

Blacked out the dials, de-pilioned (strap and pegs removed), tail tidy fitted, side bag (on order), ACF-50'd it, polished it within a millimetre of its life and now fancy a deeper grumble from the pipes, looked at V&H slip ons and others but dealer suggested keeping stock exhausts and installing an X-pipe in place of the cat (i.e de-cat the bike) better sound and lower cost than pipes.

Question is: there are many X-pipes on the market, FreeSpirits, Motone, Westlake, Tec etc, any experience good and bad with the ones you've used?

I wont fit it myself due to lack of skills, will get stealer to do so.

I have been toying with the idea of de-cating my T100 and have spoken to 2 main dealers. One said they fit the "Tec" pipe and charge between £200-£300 depending on how long it takes which I found really strange as they said they had done a few so you would think they would have a more accurate idea or is it that they have mechanics of such varying abilities that you end up paying more for the slowest. Very strange. The next dealer that I spoke with said they did not do it, when I asked why they said it just was not worth it, it mucked up the fuelling and the cat was not very restrictive to start with. Confused, you bet I am.

I fully agree with you, not looking for performance just a bit more quality racket and its way cheaper than the exhaust alternative. I also think the cat is very restrictive and I believe this manifests itself in how hot the engine runs. Would probably go ahead if the dealer could be more precise on costings. I will try to nail them down or start shopping around.

    Geoff.

Not really an expert but I have learnt that the ECU in the T100 doesn't adapt like the one in T120/Thruxton et al. I've recently done my T100 and I fitted a power commander at the same time with correct mapping, granted with Toga slip ons, and the noise is substantial when pushed and not too loud when ridden gently. It's a proper old school British twin sound, amazing noise. It may be that you'd get away without a Power Commander, I wouldn't know but Norman Hyde supply the whole kit. The Togas look like the original Bonnie silencers too.

So……. Did you get the x pipe after all and which one did you go for, i think i will go for the motone one, its forty quid more than the rest but looks a quality built item.
I bought my thruxton in Woburn 110 miles away and they are a very helpful dealership.

A little bit more than that atm. Bear in mind you got a discount for having the bike off us as well as being the guinea pig. Still good value though. We've got one left in stock atm, so still at the original price. There were two, but the other's being fitted to a Thruxton R on Tuesday - a chap who is coming over from West London as it happens.

TEC XPipes are a sod to fit cuz nothing lines up. After labour charges for the time put in we've had to charge customers who supplied their own TEC ones more than if they'd bought Weslake, Motone etc, which are better all round. If you're happy to fit your own then TEC might make sense, but be prepared for some frustration (btw, I have various TEC parts fitted to a couple of my bikes, so not dissing George).

I was thinking of fitting x-pipes to my ST, but am not sure of the legality when it comes to emissions. I guess I'm talking about MOTs, as I can;'t think of any other circumstances when it would be problematic.

Does the cat need reinstating for testing purposes?

Emissions aren't part of a bike MOT. No legal requirements once the bike has left the factory.

So the Department for Transport information doesn't apply to motorcycles when it says...?

Under the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations (Regulations 61(7) and 61A(3)) and the Road Traffic Act 1988 (Section 42) it is an offence to use on a road a vehicle which has been modified in such a way that it no longer complies with the air pollutant emissions standards it was designed to meet.
I read that as meaning I can't remove the cat from my Euro 4 bike, as presumably it would no longer be Euro 4 compliant.
