Sticky / Deteriorating Oem Grips

Weird. My grips are like new, the bike has just over 10,000 km’s. Is your bike kept inside or out? Does it spend long periods of time exposed to the elements? There must be something going on in order for it to be deteriorating like that, or maybe it could just be a bad run of grips

 

Looks like some sort of chemical reaction
Cleaning products bike/gloves?
Tree sap?

 

Right? Somethings got to be going on there.

 

Adapt the throttle tube to use the Rentals

 

If the grips are glued to the throttle tube how do they get changed say for heated grips ? I had the dealer put heated grips on my 2020 Speed Triple RS and he gave me the non heated ones to keep .

 

Was the throttle side still on the tube when they gave them back?

 

nope, just the grip bit. similar to when I changed the grips on my TTR to heated ones. Instructions are on the Triumph website. photo of grips returned to me attached---hopefully

 

I prefer grips from a dirt bike line. They tend to be tacky, not gummy or sticky,if you can differentiate between all those adjectives. You may need to invest in a new pair of gloves as well. Just food for thought!

 

Hi OhCrumON, I was going to offer to send you the grips that came off my Speedy until I saw where you lived. Hope you get this resolved.

 

Mine have done the same thing, Just not as bad as yours.

 

I've replaced a lot of OEM grips with heated ones and the OEM grips have always been glued on to the bar and throttle tube. And when I've fitted the heated grips I've always had to glue them to the bar and throttle tube. So I would be surprised if your grips *weren't* glued on.

I would suggest:
Pull / Peel / Persuade / Cut the old ones off, clean up the bar and throttle tube and bang some new ones on.

Try cleaning them with Cillet Bang spray, I think you’ll find they will be as good as new

 

They will come off the tube, it's just a bear to get them off. Mine on the scrambler were the same, they were attached to the tube in such a way that I thought I'd never get em off. After about 1-2 hours of fiddling with a long narrow knife, cut peel, roll, cut, peel roll... not only did I get them off, I actually got them off in one piece (although chewed up on the inside a bit). It is rough looking now, but could be refitted and glued back on if I were determined to do so. After I got them off, I had to file and sand the nubs off of the tube in order to get my oxford heated grips fitted. I am just posting to say it can be done. It's not easy, it won't go fast, and if you have arthritis you'll be in a lot of pain during the process; but it can be done if you have the will. Honestly, if i weren't devoted to the idea of preserving mine, and had been willing to just cut them off roughly; it would have gone much faster/easier.
